All Games: wNv inks deal with Coca-Cola

By: Luis Mira - Published May 11, 2007 at 2:16 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Chinese organization wNv has confirmed a deal with the American giant Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola, the largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of nonalcoholic drinks in the world, launches an unprecedented partnership with a gaming organization.

The duration of this deal is unknown, just like the numbers behind this partnership. Coca-Cola is from today forward one of wNv's main sponsors, joining companies like Intel, ATI or Kappa as the main supporters of the Chinese organization.

This is not the first time a giant from the food industry chooses to support a gaming organization. Last year, the quick-service restaurant company Pizza Hut agreed terms with the CPL.

Coca-Cola is the oldest and largest sponsor of the Olympic movement, so this is great news that they have added to their marketing machine by sponsoring a gaming org. With Mountain Dew being one of the founding partners of CGS, perhaps this too will push Coca-Cola to come spend more of that marketing money here in the states.

It's just a sponsor, guys. One that's not really any more significant than Intel, AMD, ATi, nVIDIA, Kappa, Pizza Hut, Verizon, etc.

So relax. It's interesting, and certainly nice for wNv, but not really that big of a deal, broadly speaking.

Actually, as a company, Coca-Cola is larger than all the companies you mentioned Cogwheel. But to an extent you are correct, since we do not know the deal points of the sponsorship, we do not know what this really means for the team, but at least it shows that another non-gaming specific company is willing to spend some money in the competitive gaming space.

#26 stfu, if they were sponsoring a source team you would be flaming all the 1.6 people saying source is definitely for real and 1.6 is dead. I swear you are the /MUTECHNO/ of source kids. Just go sit in your hole and troll the source forums and leave 1.6 stuff to people who know something about competitive games.

#27 Well that's all I'm saying. It's not exactly a huge investment for a corporation to start sponsoring a professional video gaming organization. The sponsorship expenses for such are, for corporations like these, negligible.

But you're right. The significance is that it's a non-gaming specific company. But the thing is, that's already happened before (hell, I think wNv having Kappa for a sponsor is much more interesting), so this isn't really unprecedented. It would have been 2 or 3 years ago, but not now. And that's my point.

#28 No, actually, I'd be saying the very same thing as I'm saying now. However, I would be an idiot to say something as dumb as you just suggested. You know, If you took the time to actually consider the opinions I post on this website and not just get offended by the fact that you disagree with said opinions and write me off, you would notice that I'm always objective in the points I assert, however firmly I do so.

Now, I may get caustic with people like you, but what can I say......stupid people annoy me.

I don't think Coca-Cola cares what games wNv plays, guys. They only care that the wNv website gets hundreds of thousands of hits a months.

Just pointing out the obvious here.

It would make more sense if Coca-Cola sponsored an event or event organizer than a team... and of all teams.. wNv is definitely not the best organization to sponsor... now i'm interested to see what the owner of wNv plans to do with this sponsorship. Bet she's using it as a political leverage as usual with the Chinese government.

#47 Coke don't make kids fat. Lazy kids who do nothing make themselves fat. They should go ride a bike or something. Since just walking is boring. Unless they one of the unlucky ones who end up fat no matter what.

um, what does coca cola get out of sponsoring a GAMING team...
