All Games: Angel reveals details on the World Tour, games still unknown

By: Mark Cheben - Published July 09, 2005 at 5:15 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Today was the day Angel was to announce the World Tour game for 2006, however due to ongoing negotiations this has been delayed. However, Angel gave us some details on the next World Tour and after his TsN interview I was able to ask him a few more questions.

By: Mark "jESUIT" Cheben

On TSN, Saturday afternoon Angel Munoz, president of the CPL, announced some of the details for the 2006 world tour. Initially it was expected that Angel would be announcing the next world tour game on air, but due to ongoing talks this announcement has been delayed. However, the details released on the world tour were enough to whet even the most ravenous FPS gamer's appetite.

The WT will be moving to a two game format with a team game being the primary game and tentatively a one versus one game as a secondary game. Also plans for the World Tour events and the traditional CPLs include expanding the exhibition area to accommodate more booths and turn the CPL into an “E3 for gamers”. After Angel’s TsN interview I asked him if this meant holding promotional tournaments like they did for Alien versus Predator 2. Angel saw it more as a way to attract casual gamers.

I asked Angel a few questions about the world tour and its format. As a community, we have seen CPL Spain, and CPL Brazil hold very successful side 1.6 tournaments. Angel explained that his vision was much larger than the relatively small 16 and 32 team tournaments held at their stops.

“I do not think we will have less than 128 teams for our tour stops,” said Angel, “our world tour stop in Australia will attract players from not only Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, etc.”

The world tour will be five stops. A stop in Australia has been announced by Angel, as well as a stop in the US in July, along with tentative plans for a stop in Sweden and Germany. Another question I asked Angel was if he envisioned a qualifying process for the CPL WT in the same vein as professional golf.

“I do not like the idea of a qualifying process, said Angel, “I envision the world tour as a mixture of both professional teams and Amateur local teams. We say the tour stop is going to be held on these dates and then people plan for that event and then show up.”

I also asked if the CPL was planning on expanding to more games, to which Angel replied that six is manageable and probably the upper limit of the CPL’s tournament capacity. I also asked if plans were in the works to add the two new areas for the CPL, RTS games and console games, into the world tour. Angel said that for 2006 no, but for the 2007 world tour it is not just a possibility, but a definite tour addition. Also PK is done and will no longer be a CPL game, and no successor has yet been announced.

The team game is cs 1.6

They wont get 128 source teams world wide. So I guess that settles that.

CPL have tried to push unpopular games in the past, and more often than not they've failed spectacularly, SURELY they now have to go with CS 1.6.

It definately wont be source in its present state. If valve and angel look at the results of this cpl, source wont be played again. Even with ESWC being played the same weekend cpl 1.6 has been very exciting for the teams and the viewers.

Agreed #9, after the doom3 debacle and now pk, cpl needs to use their heads instead of their wallets.

I liked watching PK :( even though I don't enjoy playing it too much. But I did like watching it... Probably because of the players playing, who would likely switch to whatever 1v1 game CPL was using. :o

#17 , it's not a matter of how many teams as much as it is what teams :o

#17, not many teams in attedance for the Source tourney were non-American. Angel did not get the proper mix of Amateur local teams and top world-class professional teams. At least for 1.6, there was a valid excuse - ESWC.

I doubt it's going to be 1.6 flame me as much as you want I just don't see it happening. Sponsor dollars speak a lot and they support source a lot more than cs 1.6 for obvious reasons. You can make any game into a popular competition game with money. Just look at PK it was a dead game and by the magic of sponsor dollars magically had lots of players competing at the majority of the stops. I'm pretty sure the majority of the competitive cs 1.6 teams will transfer. Most of them play for the money and they won't be missing out on it source is close enough that they'll be very competitive if they transfer over

But you know I could be wrong we'll just have to wait till they annouce it

This is the third time "wet" was used in the stead of "whet" in an article. It doesn't help your portrayal as a professional news site if you're constantly making mistakes.

Good report though, i'm anxious to see if it's source or 1.6 or something totally different.

#17 the CS:source tournament had months and months of more registration time AND initially had more prize money to offer. After the CPL realized they had made the most stupid decision of their history, they put it back in there with some fairly short notice

I'm not bashing source (I'm not a fan of it either) but I still enjoy watching and playing CS1.6 much more than Source, and obviously the big name teams do also

#20 dead wrong. I think this PK experiment has shown just the opposite. You can't force people to play a game that they do not enjoy. Angel has finally come to his senses and now understands that the CPL can't just pick any random game and expect there to be enthusiasm. He has to react and adapt to the community. All the CPL did with the WT was hurt the hugely competitive CS base while not helping to build up PK's at all. CS has certainly seen a falloff in popularity the last year while PK still has no community (it just has a handful of duelers who run around to different games based on current LAN tournaments).

Given the CPL's seeming acknowledgement of their failure with PK, I would find it very hard to believe that the game won't be 1.6.

#26, Angel already mentioned that the chances of Quake 4 being the game are extremely slim, due to iD's (rather bitter) history with the CPL.

He said he was willing to start fresh with iD, but the ball is in their court.

With PK out of the picture, and Quake 4's chances not looking so good, I can't think of another good 1v1 game being the WT secondary.

It is almost certain that the 1v1 game would have to be a FPS, because a RTS 1v1 as your secondary WT game wouldn't be a good idea. They are simply not as spectator friendly as FPS games.

the next 1v1 game is going to be fear.

#29 fear is teambased not 1v1. Btw it is very slim it will be cs 1.6 as the teambased game. Just think about it, if your gonna try to market a tournement to the average person you think your gonna pull many showing a 8 year old game with dated graphics? My guess would be that the new wt team game will either be bf2 or source.

The only way 1.6 sneaks in is if they expand to three games which will probably happen. Otherwise its Source or BF2. I mean if their main intention is to draw in average gamers then 1.6 with its archaic graphics just isnt going to do it. The average person will say goddamn that game look like poo and go find something else to do. Search your feelings and you will know im right.

there is no unreal tournament 2006, theyre remaking the whole game for 2007
