All Games: CPL Australia cancelled

By: Luis Mira - Published October 09, 2007 at 6:05 AM EDT - Writer Archive
The Cyberathlete Professional League has cancelled the Australian World Tour stop.
The event was supposed to take place from October 12th-14th at the Supanova Expo in Sydney with F.E.A.R and World in Conflict being the official games.

However, on Supanova's official website, a staff member explained that the CPL and Sierra USA have decided to cancel the event without the consultation of Supanova itself.

Moreover, on the CPL event page, the Australian event is marked as "complete".

The CPL has not commented on this issue yet, so stay tuned to GotFrag.com for a reaction from them.

of course it wasnt going to be high enough attendance, the official games were F.E.A.R on xbox360, and world in conflict. id be surprised if they had sufficient attendee's anywhere with those choices.

but with this being the 2nd time cpl has done this to aus now, not exactly surprised. thx guys.

The CPL has made some very huge mistakes in the past year or so, the three largest mistakes being
(1) Losing their regular sponsors (rumour has it they asked for too much $)
(2) Having a game publisher sponsor them now (who will force shi.tty non competitive games on them)
(3) And as a result cause the real competitive games like CS to be given low priority.

Hopefully with these new renewals with Valve, the CPL will start shifting course and going back to the older days.

Do I blame the CPL for what they have done over the last year? Not at all. They had done a lot for eSports to help it grow and let other organisations become.

I believe the CPL wanted to take a different route and test the waters, probably saw that the future was not as great as they imagined, and pulled back.

I hope.

cpl aus hasn't even warranted a forum thread on aus' most active gaming communities website, its better off they cancel it then have literally zero people turn up

The cpl has been all about money from the start, not the community. I laugh when I see the head cpl guy saying the for the comminity. So does fear and world in conflict have a large community? Why not host pacman, would probably get more people to show up. He got paid by the makers of those games to host them in an attempt to spur sales of the games.

They are going back to 1.6 next year to save their arse and atleast people will semi pay attention to them for awhile. I'm sure they still get money from sponsors but not as much as the world in conflict and fear guys paid them.

Eswc has been doing it right and picking games people actually play and putting on big shows. The cpl could have done that also but that would be money out of his pocket.

a mistake would have been to actually go ahead with this event with the way it was being handled in aus, the cpl are not to blame here and made the obvious call

Due to both CPL Australia and CPL Brazil being canceled, I am now out $2750 in non-refundable airfare expenses. Thus far, the CPL has refused to assist with those expenses at all. This doesn't even mention the cost associated with having two Swedes (Tr0nic and Jagad) staying with me for a month after CPL Dallas.

Yeah, uh... CPL Winter is being cancelled too, the whole idea was to get signups with the CS announcements to gain sponsors. Save your lunch money boys and girls, dont fall for it again. It's time we weed this kind of backyard organization and weasel out of eSports. This guy has taken your money and ran with it for years. He lives in a big fancy house in Dallas and drives very expensive cars.

come on holiday #23

#27 - the loss of work + hotel costs is too much since I have student loan debt to pay off yet. :/ Best I can do is just limit my loss as much as possible.

With those two games as lead. LOL
Go Read a Book =)

i can honestly say majority of people in australian cs didnt even care. FEAR and Conflict are probably great games, but nowhere near the competitveness of cs 1.6. towards the end of the year australia is having a ACNC (Australian Community National Comp) basically its gonna be a few basic quals in capital cities, with no prizes except flights to the National Final, where the best 16 teams will face off. As a community national sponsors will be minimal and more concentrated on a solid ruleset and format for the comp. which is something our previous WCG didnt have.

if you want to know more about this or just esports in general in australia check out esau . com . au

wat are you alllllllllllll talking about fear and world in conflict are great multiplayer shoot 'em ups!!!

aus has a crap community and wouldnt have been able to host a respectable comp anyways.

cpl shouldnt bother with 1.6 next year, 1.6 is dead.

#42, from what I have seen, Australia has an awesome gaming community, one of the few Australian articles here on GotFrag got more comments than the majority of posts here. Go Australia, more Australian coverage please.
