Dallas, Texas - The Cyberathlete Professional League, the once vanguard and pioneer of competitive professional video gaming, has closed its doors for good. The demise of this once dominating LAN league marks the end of an era in eSports and a passing of the torch to leagues such as MLG, CGS, WCG, ESWC and others.

Below is an excerpt from the official announcement canceling all future events and ceasing all operations.

Effective immediately, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) will cease operations. Therefore, all CPL events currently scheduled for 2008 are hereby canceled.

The CPL was launched in June 1997 with the pioneering mission of promoting and sanctioning video game competitions as a professional sport. For ten years the CPL events experienced increased growth - commencing with a small LAN event in Dallas, Texas, and culminating in world-class competitions across five continents. - www.thecpl.com

It was obvious that this was going to happen, but Its quite a shame... Sadly, they brought it upon themselves. I wonder what will happen with Severity...

Now somebody else needs to come up with a decent tournament (CEVO maybe?, They certainly have the user base and the proper reputation to take advantage of this)

It's ok, they'll now proceed to run CAL into the ground. Not that it's not already grounded, but they'll find a way to ruin what little fun is left to be had.

CEVO's not exactly in great shape either. Decaying AC, incompetent admins...what's left?
