All Games: Sky, Moon to carry Olympic torch in Beijing

By: Jaclyn Lo - Published April 15, 2008 at 7:41 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Two popular Warcraft III players were chosen to run with the Olympic torch in Beijing.
China is the host of the upcoming Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

One of the traditions of the Olympics is the torch relay, where people run with the Olympic Flame in several cities all over the globe.

This year's run range from Olympia in Greece, to London, San Francisco, Istanbul, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and Pyongyang.

In the Chinese edition of Gamespot, it's been announced that several professional gamers have been chosen as torchbearers for the Olympic relay when it arrives in China. Xiao Feng "Sky" Li, the two-time World Cyber Games Warcraft III champion, will be one of the runners.

Jae Ho "Moon" Jang, the only South Korean professional gamer on the list, will also take part on the relay.

Chinese Starcraft players Lei "Leilei" Shen and Junchun "Pj" Sha are also included in the list.

The Chinese newspost also includes the slogan "One World, One Dream", attempting to push electronic gaming to be a viable competitive sport and hopefully be part of the Olympics in the future.

There were several protests surrounding the Olympics due to China being accused of human rights violations. Precautions have been made to protect the runners from protesters.

The rest of the chosen torch runners are on the website sourced below this post.

It's fantastic to have esportsmen involved in the Olympics. But still, this doesn't do anything to legitimise the giant propaganda machine Beijing is trying to call a torch relay.

Most people who think this is a bad idea don't really know the level of competitiveness professional gaming has reached. I think Starcraft is the pro level game right now and in South Korea, it's already a sport.

Starcraft at this level takes far more skill, dedication, and concentration than many of the current olympics sports.

And as far as the "it's not very physical" argument, neither is Archery, Shooting, Equestrian.

And if you understand the game, Starcraft is a thousand times more interesting than Cycling, Rowing, Fencing, Aquatics, Weightlifting, Handball, Canoe/Kayaking, Badmiton, Bobsleigh, Luge, Biathalon, Table Tennis, Volleyball...

I think it'll be more popular than most other olympic sports within the next decade.

It's not just your everyday person playing a GAME... these pros are at a skill level that would be hard to reach if the rest of us had a few lifetimes to train. Check out Gomtv.net for some VODs with english commentary.

Gaming has become a huge part of the world's culture and although it's been marginalized in the west, the Asian nations have been more accepting of the competitive aspect.

Yeah, eSports is coming that's for sure!
....
Let's just take care of the human rights before we start taking eSports to the next level ;-).
In other words, this planet needs to start doing some heavy prioritising in a common sense of our race, not just for a few ppl who like to play (pick your game here) as they'r job.

Yeah im a whiner, i know it :p.
