The CPL has announced acquisition by an investment group.
(GotFrag) August 25, 2008 - After announcing in March that the CPL was closing its doors, the league has announced that it has been acquired by an investment group and will be announcing more information before the end of September 2008. Below is an excerpt from the announcement on the CPL website.
Middle Eastern Investment Group Acquires CPL
Monday 25 August 2008 – Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate and Dallas, Texas, USA – NewWorld.com, Inc., a leader in the interactive entertainment industry in the USA has announced that its intellectual property, Cyberathlete Professional League® (CPL) has been acquired by an investment group based in the United Arab Emirates.

Keeping the CPL name will evoke those bad memories, and might turn people away. In this case, whatever firm that bought the name obviously weighed the pros and cons, and it would seem the pros have more weight.
Unfortunately, it would seem that Angel has found one last way to squeeze money from the grave.
They have oil, they can afford to lose money :D.
Would be nice if they actually kept CPL going and paid all the money they owe to players though.
but, do you think they are just gonna hold there competitions in UAE?? or are they actually gonna come back to U.S to hold some competitions??

so both companies acquired parts of the CPL I guess, and one is based in Texas, so all the big tournies will probably still be in Texas.
I'm not so sure about that. This is a joint-announcement from two "merging" entities. Granted, one is being acquired by the other, but the logic still applies. It just sounds like they listed those locations because those are the locations of both said entities.
Also... I like how gotfrag staff is ripping on CPL... :P those MLG paychecks sure smell nice don't they?
However, you are wrong about NewWorld.com Inc. acquiring part of the CPL, along with the investment group. NewWorld.com Inc. was set up by Angel Munoz back in 1997, the same year that he founded the CPL, and has always been the owner of the CPL. As the article states, "NewWorld.com Inc....has announced that its intellectual property, Cyberathlete Professional League® (CPL) has been acquired by an investment group based in the United Arab Emirates." This means that the investment group acquired the CPL from the previous owner, NewWorld.com Inc. and not that both companies acquired parts of it.
How has anyone ripped on CPL?
