All Games: WCG 2008 StarCraft Preview

By: Lucas Bigham - Published November 05, 2008 at 7:33 PM EST - Writer Archive
GotFrag's Lucas "Colbi" Bigham will examine the groups at the World Cyber Games 2008 and give his predictions on who will advance.
Group A

Bulgaria Ivan "LRM)Lamer" Velikov
Russia Andrey "RoX.Androide" Kukhianidze
Vietnam Thanh Ha "proA.ThuocLao" Le
Germany Marius "mTw.HoRRoR" Overhageböck
Greece Stefanos "TagoMago" Gogornas

Group A includes some of the top non-Korean Terran players. In 2005, Androide finished in second place at the World Cyber Games Grand Finals in Singapore. However, since that time he has failed to show similar results. Like the Russian, Lamer made it to the top eight in Singapore where he just barely missed advancing to the semi-finals.

HoRRoR is perhaps the biggest threat to advance in this group. He poses a lot of problems for the others players due to his very unorthodox and aggressive style. If he is able to control his nerves in his first big international tournament he should have no problem advancing.

TagoMago finished in second at WCG Greece, but since the winner could not attend he took the spot. While he is one of the weaker players in the group his chances should still not be ruled out completely.

Who advances? HoRRoR and Androide.

Group B

Bulgaria Lyubomir "Masscata" Zanev
Guatemala Mauro "chivu" Castaneda
Germany Christoph "ToT)Mondragon(" Semke
Croatia Matija "MgZ)Ptak" Vragovic

Group B is without a doubt one of the weakest. Not to take anything away from two of the competitors, but Mondragon and Ptak are very likely to advance. Mondragon is last years bronze medalist and Ptak is considered one of the top zerg players in Europe.

Don't get me wrong, Chivu and Masscata are certainly not bad players, but they are just not quite at the level to take down the European elites.

Who advances? Mondragon and Ptak.

Group C

Hungary Valentin "ToT)Ace(" Vaczi
Germany Thiemo "n!Jogy" Wiegers
United Kingdom Jamie "ToT)MidiaN(" Hallam
Ukraine Dima "RoX.DIMAGA" Filipchuk
Peru Jose "CaStrO" Castro

It is very unfortunate that these players have been placed in the same group. All of them have the skill and deserve to advance, but that is impossible.

Another unfortunate fact to point out is every game will be zerg against zerg, which for a person who follows StarCraft would know is a very "random" matchup. It is a matchup that depends a lot on executing counter-builds and well-timed attacks instead of setting up a strong economy and your ability to micromanage large armies.

All of these players have the skill to advance, now it will depend on who has the luck on their side.

Who advances? CastrO and DIMAGA.

Group D

South Korea Jae Dong "n.Die_Jaedong" Lee
Russia Igor "RoX.Bruce" Utkin
Argentina Argentina
Venezuela Juan "UsK" Alvarez
Netherlands Jos "ToT)ret(" de Kroon

Group D includes one of the best StarCraft players in the world, Jaedong who should have no problem advancing. The real battle will be between Bruce and ret for second place.I believe ret has the edge. In his prime, ret was considered among the very best in Europe. Bruce, the leader of RoX, seems to have made more of a transition from a player to team leader and tournament organizer, but he should still not be counted out.

Argentina failed to send a StarCraft representative to the event at the last minute due to internal issues.

Who advances? Jaedong and ret.
