All Games: Update controversy; community reactions

By: Marc Turner - Published April 22, 2009 at 8:03 PM EDT - Writer Archive
The latest patch for Counter-Strike 1.6 comes under heavy criticism from the community.
(GotFrag) - The latest update from Valve has the competitive CS community in a frenzy. Cries of "CS is dead", "I'll never play again" and "PLEASE ROLL IT BACK" are being heard community wide. It would seem that Valve has no intention of rolling the update back and consider the matter closed.

It appears in an attempt to fix what many consider a bug, and has been a problem in some well known competitions over the last couple of years; silent crouch hopping, sound has been given to any jump motion. This would make a significant change to established competitive gameplay as many players and teams utilize the secrecy of silence during gameplay.

The problem lies within these few words in the official announcement of the update...

April 20, 2009, 4:06 pm - Valve - Product Update
Updates to Counter-Strike and Condition Zero have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:
Counter-Strike and Condition Zero
Prevent Russian Walking exploit

GotFrag spoke with a few well known pro players, managers and community members about the update and what it means for competitive Counter Strike.

James "jame^s" O'Conner
James "Jame^s" O'Conner
Pro Player

"If adding the jumping noise was the only way to fix crouch hopping then I'm OK with it. Obviously they need to fix the crashing sound loop bug. But if they can do away with the noise when you jump and the noise when you go up ladders slowly and still keep the crouch hopping fix then I think valve would be foolish to not remove the additional sound triggers."

Alex Garfield
Alex Garfield
Owner/Manager Team EG

"I think that any potential positives that have come via fixing the exploit (if you're even of the opinion that it needed to be fixed in the first place) have been easily outweighed by the bugginess that came along with the "fix." We now have movement sounds being made and heard in situations that are completely absurd from a competitive standpoint."

Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen
Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen
Pro Player

"I think despite making the game slower, removing duckhopping is a good thing because in the long run it'll make CS less random especially at LANs where you almost never had to walk for the last year. The jump sound is a little annoying and will take time to get used to, but I don't think it's as big deal as people make it out to be; everyone will just adapt anyways. The only real problem with the update is the crashes, which is going to definitely cause some problems in the CEVO playoffs, as I doubt Valve will fix that in time."

Bobby "weenus" Hicks
Bobby "Weenus" Hicks
eSports Journalist

"It seems strange for Valve to come and patch something out of the blue like this, when it really wasn't a game breaking issue to Counter-Strike as a whole. The change constricts the competitive game-play massively, and strategies will have to be re-worked if not completely scrapped as a whole now."

"Looking at the overall picture though, people are likely to get over it and move on. The community has moved past much bigger changes multiple times in the past. The community may forget the older days before the slowdown after jumping which was brought in to combat bunny hopping (in-effectively) and it's not something they just take as part of Counter-Strike, and the loss of silent jumping/boosting will likely have a similar history."

"I don't believe it's all bad though. Every great era of Counter-Strike had a huge, game changing event that really spurred it's evolution. A great example of this was the update to the money system that had completely changed the pacing of competitive Counter-Strike. Hopefully this gameplay change will be used to help redefine Counter-Strike yet again, and shakeup the old faithful strategies and styles that teams have been leaning on for so long, in order to bring on yet another new evolution of the competition and gameplay styles."

What do YOU think?

Do the changes spell out a new phase of counter-strike gameplay history? Or are these claims merely a product of hype coming in the immediate wake of the announcements?

What do you see becoming of competitive CS as a result of the update?

I was surprised reading this. I expected more of a negative response from these people.

I still think that the update was a bad idea. I don't mind if they somehow fix the crouch hopping, but I totally disagree with the jump sound. I've played in pubs before where if you try and crouch hop you immediately stop moving. Why doesn't valve just do something like that?

valvue isn't gonna leave a error where it crashes your game and prevents you from playing competitively let alone playing at all because it would hurt their business as well... just give it time and stop being whiney babies.. they will take care of it.

It's a BUG, the sounds of a landscape can be carried from one area to another(see the video from the SK site). I don't think the footstep sound for jumping was intentional.
The only thing I smoke is mid. Counter-Strike, my anti-drug.

i think getting rid of crouch hopping is a good thing, its cheesey and ruins the hitboxes.. the sound thing is a small deal which really isnt a big deal.. they just need to fix the crashing which i havent experienced yet

Out of all the time that valve HASN'T updated CS 1.6 they come out with this? Come on now...lets see some REAL improvements to the game, not taking away an aspect that has been a part of it for so long.

Ridiculous...just ridiculous.

personally I hated crouch running at first, it drove me nuts and it didn't make sense. I got used to it though, it was part of the game and if you hit the person at the right time, it brings them to a dead stop allowing an easy kill. So that really doesn't bother me anymore. What bothers me is why would you make it makes noise when you're in the process of jumping? It would make far more sense if it made noise when you land, which it already does if you jump from higher than normal. Also, I'm pretty sure silent running doesn't require jumping, so that patch did hardly anything. Yes I realize when you duck while walking it makes noise now. This patch has taken away a HUGE element of competitive CS, there will be no more Sneaky or "Ninja" defuses for sure. The ENTIRE concept of out smarting and outwitting your opponent is also thrown out the window. I am convinced now you are just trying to make 1.6 source for people with bad computers. The recoil on my guns seems different, boosting is totally useless, and you've dumbed down this game entirely. Let's all just go get into competitive Super Mario brothers because the noise I make when I jump in CS is equally loud and annoying as the noise Mario makes when he's Jumping. BOING!

I completely agree with #10, and I touched on it lightly in my quote but, I don't know... Thing one aspect I've always liked about competitive gaming throughout every game, CS, the duel games, and all that, was adaption. Either people adapting to different play styles from different players, or having to adapt to changes in the game. This is just one more opportunity to adapt and make some changes.
I tip my hat to any entity that could bring so much integrity to evil.

Funny thing is you CAN still crouch hop quietly.....so this whole update was really pointless, as for making sounds everytime u leave the floor is fu_cking ret_arded, they more then likley have people from source working on 1.6 as there terribly reta_rded. and all the crashes/bugs just valves treat to try kill cs once again. d!ck_headZ

People will adapt, but the +duck, +showscore bug is annoying. And also with the new jumpsound, cluthes will be much easier, ex. from a CTs perspective on nuke in a 1on1, 1on2, 1on3 (in 1on4 and 1on5 it would probably be smarter if you safed your weap) comming from ramp, when you jump the ladder to go b1, you will have to wait like 15 sec, before you can go up - the T's would might think that you went around yard and come trough gate as a fake.

Sorry i don't know the correct therms for certain spot in CS USA, i hope im right.

Here is what some Euros think about the new update.

QUOTE:
MJE pro player MTW.dk– Instead of fixing already existing bugs, they added a ridiculous jump and made it harder to duckjump. It really slows the game down and makes it a lot more boring. I really dont understand what they thought changing the jump thing, you cant go up a ladder without making noise which is really stupid.

QUOTE:
Taz pro player exMYM – I would like to know whos responsible for the cs 1.6 changes in Valve and which public players they have listened to when it comes to ideas.

QUOTE:
natu proplayer exCrackClan – It doesn't really affect me much, never been such a great fan. Only thing that is a shame is that I think the game is going to slow down a little bit. I've played most of my pro career without tapping the S*** out of my +duck button so I don't think I'll be shocked. Sucks for players like f0rest though I guess? All in all, people will get adjusted to this just like they have with past changes.

QUOTE:
dsn proplayer fnatic – I can understand that VALVe will get rid of russian walking, but the new sound when is jumping f****** annoying!!!!

The dsn quote is translated from swedish

clutching is impossible. you wait 15 second and some kid is just going to stare you down, if it's 1 v 1 he'll just wait for you to defuse and he'll know which way you're coming from all the time so he can just rotate around you. Make defuse noises silent and we'll call it even. Just completely ruin the game, but at least make it even.

In the cases of 1vs1's with this new update, heres a better one:

On inferno and you're a CT. They plant in default spot in A. You KNOW the last T is in the halls so you fake defuse, jump up on the bomb to get on the box and wait for him to peak. But you're able to out shoot him because you have a secret advantage on the height and angle.

I did this last night and lost because he knew I was off. Theres a better example.

The sound should be made when you land from a jump, not when you take off. Climbing crates should not make a sound. Jumping down from them should.

I first played Half Life in 1999. The first version of CS I played was Beta 7 and I've been playing competitively since 2004. I remember when the slow down after jumping was introduced and it was a major update at the time. The game was Quake-like before that you could bhop everywhere just by holding forward and tapping the space bar. The community adapted and the game moved on and strengthened. It is a "realism" mod after all.

I'm all for removing silent running. This crash bug is killing the game (is that what Valve want?). Every scrim I've been in since it came out has players dropping every 2nd round. Money is getting screwed. In a round last night 2/3 of the way into the 1st half a team we were vsing lost 3 players at once. The jumping sound is annoying and I've had to adapt my gameplay significantly. It's annoying me because to me it doesn't seem realistic. When I jump irl, I don't stamp my feet, but I make a noise when I land.

This Half-Life and more so Counter-Strike have made Valve what they are today. I feel they don’t give this game enough support. I thought the introduction of the advertising in-game would bring a new stream of income in for Counter-Strike and therefore we should see some active support and development but all we’ve seen so far is this buggy and unrealistic patch. It will be WoW and Quake for me until the game is fixed if ever. I’ll never play CS:S. It was a failure as a competitive game. Valve need to move on from it already.
