All Games: Gold Farming No More

By: Brett Sheffield - Published June 30, 2009 at 7:56 PM EDT - Writer Archive
China has banned all forms of gold farming.
GotFrag.com - Just recently the Chinese government has stepped in to stop gold farming. They have banned all users and game developers alike from buying or trading for in-game currency. This is the first time any legal actions have been taken in the 10+ years gold farming has been a popular way to make money. This means that the booming market of buying/selling WoW Gold is no longer legal in China.

Gold farming, mostly known when a player or a group of players attempts to acquire as much in-game currency as they can in the shortest amount of time. They then sell the currency online to make a profit, sometimes a major one.

A recent study found that almost 85% of all companies that farm gold are based in China. These companies bring in an estimated $200 million to $1 billion dollars annually. This is a shocking amount and could be a devastating blow to parts of the economy in China.

The Chinese government released this statement with the new ruling:

"The virtual currency, which is converted into real money at a certain exchange rate, will only be allowed to trade in virtual goods and services provided by its issuer, not real goods and services."

It is still uncertain just how far the government will take it and if it will be fully enforced. Will we still be able to see these companies thrive, or will the industry be in ruins because of this shocking announcement? Only time will tell where the Chinese government and the Companies will agree on a resolution, or the Companies will have to find a new home to farm gold.

Incoming hike on the price of gold. Might as well buy it now from chinese farmers and sell it back once the bans come into effect.

I do not see this happening... Seeing as how the chinese gold farming operations work, it is nearly impossible for China to pull this off. Sites such as www.MOGS.com are USA based and the games they sell are USA based, granted a majority of the supply there is from players in the USA some comes from China gold farms... if China is going to ban they are going to focus on domestic games to China, however the level of corruption in China at a local level is insane so for the State wide government to do this they have to get through the corrupt local government... All I can say is good luck!

What makes you think they can't just re-route the IP's or spoof them to where they pop up as Russia, Japan, etc?

I'm not sure what to make of the fact that it could actually impact their GDP.

Is this really a problem??? If people pay outrageous prices for gold it is their own fault. China has alot more issues than worrying about WOW gold farming.

I've read an article that enlightened me about the real score about the banning of gold farming in China which explained that it's not about WoW but about QQ coins that China is concerned about. The news about banning, didn't failed to make the gamers concern when it comes to farming currency on the MMO's they are playing specially for those who played WoW like me. Might as well share that article with you: http://www.wowgoldfacts.com/2009/07/06/th..
