All Games: Learn From The Best

By: Danny Evans - Published December 26, 2002 at 8:09 PM EST - Writer Archive
Some of the world's top players weigh in on getting better at CS.
Many of you are probably wondering, “How can I improve my game?” Well, I got a chance to ask many famous CS players this very same question from both North America & Europe. Let’s take a look!

zEx|sunman:

“If you want to get better with you team, you got to scrim/pcw all the time with them to develop teamwork. If you’re looking on improving your personal game, you just got to work at it on your own, learn on how to shoot diff. weapons depending on the one you have. I never was taught or told how to play, it just came naturally. So if you’re meant to play CS it will come in time and practice.”

eoL-DarK:

“Watch demo's of good players/teams, and play a lot.”

[9]ScreaM:

“If you want to improve your "Individual Skill" then I think the best part is to play ALOT of public game, but when you have that aim you want then you need the "Match understanding sense" :) So the best to get that part is to play very much clan wars. Then it will come in time. And if you want "Respect" from the "Top clans" you have to show yourself on LAN. That’s the only way today :)”

esu|Swift:

“Well, start off by watching demos from the top teams, and their players, that is a good way to learn new stuff. After that I would try out playing POD Bots as many players do, just to find out exactly how every weapon works and to perfect your skills, other than that its just hard work and dedication that will get you to the top.”

TAU|Griffin:

“I believe that anyone can aim as fast and as accurately as anyone from any of the top teams. The one thing that makes the difference, in my opinion, is the intelligence you have in the game and how consistent you are.”

SK|Brunk:

“Hmm, watch demos to see how other players play and mix some styles. Learn how to play smart :)”

zEx|shaGuar:

“One of the most important aspects of counter-strike is your tactical intelligence and how you use it. Whether it's your own personal smarts, or the tactics you create within your team. One of the most important things I've learned over the course of my CS career is this: If you're a terrorist, put yourself in a counter-terrorist’s shoes, if you're a ct, put yourself in a T's shoes.

Example: if you're attacking (as T) on a map like de_dust2 going to bombsite B, think as a CT covering B would, that way you'll develop better position if you were to ever cover that area, and also discover the best way to attack, as well as predict where your enemy will be.”

[W.E.W]castro:

“Learn how to throw flashes *ahem* (dizza).....listen to your team, work on aim, and snipe the sh*t outta the euros…”

TAU|Sladek:

“On an individual view, some ways to improve your skills might be to find the mouse that is right for you. For me, that would be the Microsoft Explorer 3.0, a commonly used mouse. Also, a mousepad can also be somewhat important, such as a fUnc or steel. Another is your resolution. What resolution you use really depends on your FPS and monitor size, that is mostly your choice. Working on your aim in pubs and on aim maps always he.”

eoL-XeqtR:

“CS intelligence, talent for gaming, be able to communicate with others and aim. Improve those aspects except of course the talent for gaming, that’s just something u have or don’t have. And you'll go far. How is just to play... preferably at highest possible level. I only pub if I have _nothing_ else to do...or trying some new stuff...like sensitivity or resolution...never to actually go and practice my aim or try to become a better cs player.”

[rs]-icesalmon:

“Play against people better than yourself, you can't get better unless you are tested by people better than you. Learn to use rifles and pistols more so than awp whoreing like everyone else they are more useful than any other gun. Play to have fun it helps a lot. Learn to move and shoot, and utilize flash bangs and hand grenades.”

SK|Potti:

“Hard to say , everyone have there own thing they need to do to improve , for example the less I play cs public the better I get in clan wars donno why , some people get better aim off playing a lot of public. But the best way imo is to play a lot of scrims (pcw as we say in euro) practice clan war.”

[rs]-grasle:

“What I have done to improve my game is stay consistent, stick with one sensitivity, mouse, resolution, etc... Play a lot, always play pubs, scrims, bots, anything to work on your aim.. Watch demo's of top players, learn their movement and their style of play(good places to sit and setups).”

GoL | ElemenT:

“It has nothing to do with the config, so stop searching for a "pro" config. Make one you like yourself; I've played with mine for 3 years now. Haven't changed a thing. If your not so good at aiming with your hand, try to keep the mouse in a headshot position and strafe into the head of the opponent.”

zEx|Ja$pal:

“Don't change your sh*t too often. Just stick with what you like, and with what you play well with, not what others are using/have.”

[W.E.W]siNNa:

“Always trust your shot, the minute u doubt yourself your worthless - never let an opponent scare u into changing your style of play - be calm be vocal be supportive be determined be fearless stay motivated encourage your teammates which will strengthen their confidence - communication motivation team moral team determination and the guts to take risks will only lead to positive things and respect.”

[3D]-Rambo:

“Try thinking of the best thing you can do in any situation and then executing it ;) learn from your cs mistakes.”

SK|Bengan:

“1st people should start using there brain and think when they play. 2nd keep on playing the more u play the better u get. Play as much as u can to get as good as possible, when u aren’t playing pcw go play public to improve your aim/skill. At my level its hard to improve by playing public but if u want to improve a lot u should play as much as u can 2-5h/day maybe more if u want to get better faster...”

[DoP]-Destroyer:

“Well honestly its just playing a lot, and getting your aim down. Scrimming/matching in top leagues to build smarts up also. Nothing more ;D”

GoL | Cozmoz:

“Well I can’t say how the right way to do it ... but i play all the gathers I can mixteams ect ect... That they way for me to get more tp and aim too... but if u only are thinking on the aim... 2on2s public is the way I think. To keep up the mode... you should play everyday 2-3 hours... But I can only say these things... Out from what I’m doing :P”

Rival|Siege:

"CS is a team game, so if you want to improve your game, you need to be able to work with a team. Work on communication, and your ability to cooperate with others, and most importantly remember why you are playing, and have a good time."

[3D]-Kane:

“Find something you're comfortable with and stick to it, don't worry about what someone else’s settings are. There’s no such thing as a perfect res/sensitivity or anything else like that. No matter what you do you'll always have high frag games and games where you just feel like you're getting owned, it’s how CS is now.”

GoL | mysse:

“Well u should find a sensitivity and a mouse that fits u the best... and of course a good config is always good to have I don’t mean hax config but a config that fits u the best... that’s all I’ve done :)”

Thanks to everyone who participated in replying with a response and we’d enjoy visiting with you in #GotFrag @ IRC.GamesNET.NET! Merry Christmas!
