Quake: Weenus Interviews Nomadic

A few weeks ago you beat Jonathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel by a frag in the Fatal1ty shootout at the CES tradeshow here in Las Vegas. As someone whose name is considered an underdog by some of the more casual fans, how do you feel that will help your reputation in the local American and International Quake4 scene?

Well, I like to think that instead of it helping to promote my name, or promote my status as far as where many may hold me in their minds in regards to the top Quakers, I would prefer it instead secure myself, so people won't think I am some sort of fluke maybe, hehe:). Yes I did win by 1 frag, but if hadn't beat him I would have been very disappointed in myself. when I say secure, I mean hopefully people already thought I was up there, as in, the journey is kind of over, and now it's all about winning tournaments:)

You're a part of the now famous American Quake squad, Clan Kapitol, are you going to be playing in any Team Deathmatch or will you continue to focus on 1vs1 duels?

Despite the fact they are in the Americup, clan kapitol hasn't really been too focused on fielding our main starters for matches, in fact we're lucky if we have 4 by the time our matches roll around, usually people have either forgotten or don't care to play tdm, I have to admit it is kind of a shame. I do feel we have a lot of talent and if we could field our Top 4 (bloodshot, carde, czm, and myself) we could easily be as unstoppable as cK was in q3. If we could field those 4 I don't really see any team taking a map on us in the whole tournament:) But to be honest my focus is mainly on 1v1 at the moment and with the WT approaching I don't really see that changing in the near future :\ czm is busy at Princeton, blood and carde I think are into q4world and myself 1v1. I don't mean to take away from the other teams, but that is my honest opinion.

Did Fatal1ty recognize you as a member of cK, a legacy he himself was once apart of? Did he seem surprised or modest after the match?

Hehe, yes, in fact before the match, one of the commentators would always ask him what he was planning, and he saw on my badge CLAN KAPITOL, so he made a comment, something like "yea this guy is a part of my old quake3 team, and I know he just performed well at cpl so this should be a good match." or something along those lines.

Right now is an important time in the molding of the year to come in terms of Quake 4. One of the hottest debates in the community is the Euro vs. American players, skill wise. Emerging as a top 3 American competitor based from the final CPL standings, how do you feel coming into the spotlight and how do you feel about the year ahead? You had similar success in Doom 3, but by that time, most of the major organizations had already given up on the doomed title, pardon the pun.

Coming into the spotlight I feel pretty comfortable, obviously there is the pressure that goes along with it but I find myself able to deal, and play through it. My most fun matches are the ones that I play against the foreign players, going up against that different style and pace of play really keeps my mind on the match, and off of who is watching, and what they may be thinking or saying of me. As far as the year ahead goes, well I certainly remain hopeful, I honestly feel the sky is the limit and I am anxious to sit back down at the next big tournament.

What do you think in retrospect to that position on international play, of players like socrates_, destrukt, cl0ck, cpense, and how do you think they will add up against some of the MIA legendary American players like fatal1ty, czm or zero4?

Honestly it all depends on the individual, who can adapt when the time comes, and looking at those four names I could tell you who will be able to and who will be unable, but for drama's sake, I am not going to name names :) As far as living up to the old q3 all-stars, the potential is definitely there, we'll see.

Beginning the year of 2006, the European ranks seem fairly stacked, with cooller and toxic leading the charge. Do you see any of these guys taking a significant fall from grace, or will the Quake community live in fear of these men for the entire season?

Hehe, if by fall from grace you mean, getting beat by an American, then yes. I definitely think there will be some falling perhaps even some nose dives from grace.

Now that I fought through most of the stock stuff, I'm going to hit on a slightly touchy subject. You placed in the 9th through 12th standing alongside Destrukt, Jibo and Scooby, after receiving a forfeit loss to Deus of 4Kings. Can you shine some light on that for some of the readers?

Basically I showed up ten minutes late for check-ins, obviously Justin Blanchard wasn't feeling as lenient as he was in the past days of the tournament (cooller), even though the tournament was now down to 12 players, I basically had an example made of myself. Obviously I was late for a match; I guess I just got what was coming.

How did Deus feel about the ruling, and do you believe that you could have beaten Deus? Essentially, many see the forfeit loss was the difference between 8th place and 9th - 12th, as well as $150, if not more. Plan on being on time at the next tournament?

Deus was really disappointed, I even asked him, hey I am sorry for being late is it cool if we play, to which he answered, "yea man, of course." Do I think I could have beaten him? No idea=). Yea, hopefully this won't happen again, preparing for a tournament weeks in advance and then getting the shaft because of tardiness blows.

Alright, I know you're tired, we're pushing AM hours here so I'll get this closed up. What do you plan on doing with your $2,950 of total winnings through Quake 4 so far? Are we going to see 'Nomadic does Disneyland'?

Haha, actually I didn't win $2500 from the shootout, that was a mistake, would have been nice though. :P Nah, instead I think you're gonna see, Nomadic does the 99 cent menu at Jack in the Box.

Don't worry brother, I'm essentially working two jobs, so while I may not be on the 99 cent menu, I'm close enough, living off Bacon and Cheese Chiabata burgers. What did you win from the shootout? Piece of mind?

Hehe yea, more of a moral victory I guess, plus winning that with all the companies and people that were watching, (and there were a lot of people watching) is always a plus, and a nifty zen microphoto on the side :>

Alright, I just want to thank you tons for staying up so late answering my questions. Great job at CPL and at the Shootout, you know I'm proud of ya. Any last words or shoutouts?

I want to say thanks to the cK guys, zier/bonez for working so hard with the Razer people to try and turn clan Kapitol from a clan to a professional gaming team, it's far overdue. Lastly I want to thank RocketBoy for letting me stay and LAN with him pre-cpl, I definitely wouldn't have done as well as I did if it wasn't for the practice I got in that room.
