Quake: KODE5 Quake 4 Finals Preview

By: Rod Breslau - Published August 24, 2006 at 3:17 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Slasher recieves insight from the players and deciphers their chances at this weekend's KODE5 Quake 4 finals.

Unlike the WarCraft III and Counter-Strike tournaments, KODE5's inaugural Quake 4 finals will be held this weekend at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. The event cannot be held with its e-sport counterparts as Quake 4 (and Quake 3) are banned in China and is not allowed to bought nor played in competition.

This has not stopped all problems as controversy has already surfaced through Germany's own laws. All players must be 18 years or older, which has hampered two players in their respected qualifiers. KODE5 Russia winner and new fnatic signee Alexey "Cypher" Yushanevsky was forced to resign his spot to second place finished Anton "Cooller" Singov due to Alexey's 16-year old age. Sabian "Clamp-ok" Hayblum found this out as well after he qualified for the USA finals. He proceeded to attend anyway despite his knowledge that he would not be able to attend Germany if he won. KODE5 UK victor and Fnatic's second representative, Jay "TooGoood" Harding, also had to drop out of the competition, though to an RSI injury and not age restrictions. Germany's Marcel "a-L|k1ller" Paul has replaced Harding with his second place KODE5 UK finish, as well as taken his 4th seed in the tournament.

Man or .... Hair? The world may never know.
This weekend's finals will be the first major Quake 4 LAN event to feature the new 1.3 point release. The new point release changed many key features including movement and weapon damage values. Johan "toxic" Quick, Alessandro "stermy" Avallone, Rafik "LoSt-CaUsE" Bryant and Marcel "a-L|k1ller" Paul weigh in on the changes in 1.3, their thoughts on KODE5 as a whole, and their top 3 predictions for the finals. All followed by player analysis with strengths and weaknesses of each player and their chances.
