Is quake III and 4 still popular for league play? if so, about how many players, and frequent events for it? [Yes, I am aware of quakecon.] Which of the two are more popular? I'm assumign Quake4

Pretty much everything (about 95%) is QuakeLive now, and for good reason, the game is amazing =]
