Quake: Clan Kapitol Interview

By: Patrick Todd - Published November 24, 2005 at 5:08 AM EST - Writer Archive
GotFrag had a chance to talk to the guys at Clan Kapitol, a highly successful team since Quake I. We now sit down and talk to them about their plans for Quake 4.

Would you introduce yourself and your teammates?

I’m Corey Allen (s13). My teammates in Quake 4 are apocalypse, bloodshot, nomadic, shaftian, grimey, shock, élan, glock, and drug.

How did the team form and how long have you been together?

The team was formed by guys who were playing from the q3 squad, some that I picked up in Rocket Arena 3(ra3), and some that I LAN with in tdm / ra3 (shock and glock respectively). There are also a few who came aboard from the Xeno acquisition which would include grimey and élan. One is from another clan which recently disbanded who has known of cK since quake 1 (drug). One of the players actually invited me into cK way back in the day (the mighty cK-Apocalypse).

How often does your team practice during the week?

I’d say we try to get in about 5 scrims a week if possible.

Do you feel Quake IV will have a more broad mainstream appeal then previous DM games? If so why?

I think that’s really hard to say. The weapon balance is really nice in Q4, but I can't say it will have more mainstream appeal because your mainstream users are mainly teens or guys my age with bills who aren’t so fast to drop a boatload of money on a new pc just to get 60 fps in the game.

What are your expectations of next year's World Series?

I hate baseball. Its fun to watch in person , but it’s the most boring, least physically demanding sport on the planet. Where else can genuinely out of shape men (those who are so huge they need pinch runners) who can hit a ball then go to the sidelines and eat fresh ordered pizza, then sleep, succeed? Certainly not football, those 300+ lb lineman are in tremendous shape, and I know definitely they can't get by with that in the world of MMA [Note: Mixed Martial Arts](where the best athletes are)…The only place where you can be equally physically ailed in terms of weight and succeed outside of baseball is ironically e-sports…fortunately e-sports aren’t as boring.

Do you believe you will be as successful in Quake IV as you were in Quake III?

Yes, without a doubt. As long as we have solid connections, and don’t time out, I don’t see us losing at all.

Has your team had any notable victories?

In quake 3 there were between 11 and 13 different tournaments / leagues that we won, I honestly cant even remember them all. I think the one that stands out the most was Frag4 Q3 TDM Championship because that was held on a world scale and not just the USA.

Who do you feel will provide the most challenge to your team in the future?

I’d say the most challenge would come from b|d (blackdragons). They have nice team play but also a fatal flaw which we will quickly expose when the games actually matter. They are a great group of guys though who believe in themselves…and that’s a good thing.

Is there anyone on your team that you feel stands out in pure individual skill?

If there were an “I” in team I could answer that question. But to give a more general answer, I’d have to say that the guy who runs quad most in the game is typically the one who stands out. Its not hard when you spend 5 minutes of the game running around 4x as powerful as everyone else.

Do you play any other games besides Quake IV in your spare time?

Yes, I recently finished FEAR, and I’m working on completing Serious Sam 2 with glock in cooperative play, as well as Doom 3 cooperative. I plan on checking out the Chronicles of Narnia when its out.

If you could change one thing about Quake IV what would it be?

It would be the absolutely lame 60 fps cap. I seriously think they should remove that. It really sucks (pardon my language) that they are penalizing the people who paid for high end pcs by capping their fps to 60. The mouse feels totally out of wack and it takes Quake a step backward, especially for those who came from Q3 with 125 locked fps. Q3 was so much smoother than Q4 because of this, and I think its absolutely terrible that they put this cap on. It’s the reason I still play Q3 from time to time and don’t devote a lot of time to Q4…I can’t get more than 60 fps.

Any shoutouts?

Yeah I’d like to give a shoutout to l3r0y…our reserve lan player (hopefully online too) and one for clan K WEE GEE.

We would like to thank cK for their time answering our questions and wish them good luck in Quake IV. Look out for them to be a groundbreaking force in the art of death matching and entertaining us with some crowd pleasing matches.
