Joe "joeker" Hoffend got to sit down with one of gaming's greats, Brian "destrukt" Flander. The interview goes into destrukt's life outside gaming, his gaming career plans, and his thoughts on various gaming issues. ![]() I am more serious than I have ever been about any game. Come January, "Professional Quake 4 player" will be my job title. I started gaming professionally back in 2000 after I graduated high school. I currently have my own brand name geared at developing high quality gaming accessories and peripherals. I've played UT99, CS, D3 and PK competitively in tournaments. Most of my time as a professional gamer has been spent with UT99 and CS. Some of my accomplishments include winning the WCGC in 2000 for UT99 and in the summer of 2003 I placed 7th at CPL for CS with [rdw]. I also played in the CAL I finals with zEx in CS where we lost to Rival 13-11. I won the w2z PK tournament and placed 2nd behind cha0ticz in the STFU and Play Doom3 invitational online tournament. How are DKT pad sales these days? The Destrukt pad, as most of you know it, has been discontinued. I terminated my contract with GamerzStuff.com due to philosophical differences. However, do not fear, the new DKT pad will be out soon. I am currently working with EverGlide to produce a mouse, mouse pad, and a keyboard geared for computer gamers. These products will be specifically engineered for hardcore and casual gamers. These products should be available sometime after the new year. So what have you been doing with yourself since you have not been in the gaming scene lately? I finally became tired of juggling three jobs, school, fiancé, and gaming... so I took a small hiatus from gaming. Now I am finally finishing school in December and I'll be getting married in June to my fiancé of seven years, Tonia. I initially thought the break would be permanent, but thanks to my good friends at EverGlide I will be able to continue my professionally gaming career. I have acquired a sponsorship with EverGlide as well as an agreement to work on new gaming products. This new opportunity will allow me to do something I have not been ever able to do... focus 100% of my energy on gaming. It will literally be my job. What is your greatest strength and how does it make you a better gamer? My greatest strength is my passion for gaming. I am dedicated to being as good as I can which means sacrificing many aspects to practice and improve myself. If I'm "burned out" or if I'm just sick of playing that’s when I will need to play more. It's a sports mentality. When you are having basketball practice and it’s the end of the day and you just got done running 20 killers. What do you do? You shoot free throws and work on your jump shot. You need to train the mind just like you would the body. So that when its crunch time, you hit the shot. Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully, still competing. However, if I am not competing I will definitely be a part of the professional gaming community. If I am not You have dabbled in team games before, such as Counter-Strike. Do you see yourself as a 1v1 player at heart, or do you like both equally? I definitely see myself as a 1v1 player at heart, however team games have their benefits. I made so many friends on my Counter-Strike teams. Many of these friends I will have for life. 1v1 games on the other hand allow a person to practice at will and at any given time of the day. It also eliminates the blame game. If you lose, its your fault, no fingers to point. Some of us have seen you practicing Quake 4, how serious are you about competing in it? I am more serious than I have ever been about any game. Come January, "Professional Quake 4 player" will be my job title. I'm planning on playing Q4 every single day. Whether I will be boot camping or playing online I will be playing hours per day preparing for the next tour stop. One could say your Painkiller career was very lackluster and underachieving, would you agree? Yes I would definitely agree. I only did attend two official world tour stops and placed 17-24 at both. Like I said it was very difficult to have two internships, a weekend job, school, and to try and compete. Did I mention I had a fiancé who wanted to spend time with me too? I really don't like to make excuses but I felt I did as well as I could for the situation I was in. I did win the only non-CPL American tournament at w2z. And at the Spain qualifier in Turkey I placed 13-16 after losing to Stelam in double OT and Sakh by two on Psycho. Stelam went on to win the next event in Spain. Was I bad? No... but I wasn't dedicated enough because I couldn't be, which is why I took a break… it was just too frustrating. As badly as I wanted to compete I knew I wouldn't be able to win because I didn't have the time to dedicate.
