Quake: 12 Seeded Cpense Falls to Dreamhack Winner

Caleb 'Rev' Pense falls in the third round to the Swedish winner of Dreamhack, Johan 'Toxic' Quick. With the match only lasting two maps, starting with Phrantic, ending with Galang, cpense found himself at the bottom of a vicious clinic on lightning gunning.

Instead of taking a coin toss, nice guy cpense decided to allow the match to start off with toxic's map pick, Phrantic. Early on, Toxic was aware he had the match. Every time that cpense attempted to capitalize on the space toxic would leave grabbing the shards and rockets up top to snatch up the red armor, he would find himself choked into the red armor chamber. Even when cpense hopped up onto the hyperblaster passage, he would go down to rockets and end up out shot by toxic's lightning gun. Toxic made sure to keep control of the gold health bubble and red armor for the most part, even though he gave cpense the ground on the armor shards and lightning gun, simply in my opinion, because toxic was well aware that his lightning gun was about as on as it gets.

Multiple times cpense tried to take toxic head to head with lightning gun battles, but he would only get him down through the armor before he himself fell to the thunder. Throughout the majority of the match, toxic held a moderate but aggressive pace until the last five minutes, in which he began to completely destroy cpense. Pense managed to pull one kill off, and while many of the battles were close, he was totally edged out in every fight. When the match ended, cpense looked as if he saw it coming. Phrantic is known as toxic's best map, and from the match he played against cpense, that’s completely true.

Final Score: toxic 32 - cpense 1

Pense went into Galang with a shaken confidence, he seemed to know that he has a direct rail, but after what he saw on account by toxic, he knew he was in for a brutal battle. Toxic pulled the first kill, and for the first five minutes, the two traded frags and control of the map. Pense respectively controlled the red armor and upper platform, which also gave him access to a railgun and one of the best rail vantage points. Pense would spawn, and receive a rocket right above the upper platform railgun. This left him at an immediate disadvantage with 25 health. While Pense seemed to hit the majority of his rail shots, and was still fairly on with lightning gun, toxic was confident by answering the rails with his own, as well as a guaranteed early rocket in most of the battles. One of the biggest problems I notice with cpense's style is his extremely limited arsenal. He always revents to the lightning gun, which is detrimental to Quake4, but it just wasn't the answer against toxic. While cpense knew the map like the back of his hand, especially in the first half of the battle in which he was always ready for toxic when he would emerge from a passage, jump pad, or turn a corner, he was being pushed off control of the map by each second. In one instance, physically when toxic played cpense off of the mega health platform with close quarters rockets.

Pense made a small comeback at the four minute mark, and had the intensity to really catch up in the ten frag deficit at that point, but he was just completely out played.

Final Score: toxic 25 - cpense 10

Overall, toxic is amazing. Even if you have the drop on the guy, he will take you down with his unflinching close quarters play, unstoppable prefired rockets and grenades, and a lightning gun that never misses. Even when the map is controlled around him, he finds a way to sneak through the cracks and catch you with his aim. Once again, cpense's biggest mistake was probably his limited weaponry. When he used his shotgun, it seemed to work for him, a bit more than the lightning gun against toxic. He should have also tried taking toxic head on in the rocket battles, where he may have proven to be more successful than he was with his lightning gun. Even with the distance between the scores, it was still a close match. Toxic was just seemingly unstoppable.

Caleb Pense goes on to play against Vicious in the lower bracket, who has been convincingly traveling through the lower bracket after being knocked down by XZIST. Toxic will go on to play against iepp, who I'm expecting to fall in similar fashion to cpense. Toxic was seeded #21 and cpense was seeded #12
