Quake: Q4: Prefiring with weenus!

By: Bobby Hicks - Published December 17, 2005 at 5:18 PM EST - Writer Archive
Uh oh! Bobby "weenus" Hicks is back again. This time he is going to take his stab at pre-firing Quake matches and giving his thoughts for matches to come.

The Opinions expressed in this piece do not necessarily reflect those of GotFrag. But we will take all of the credit for any jokes Bobby makes that make you laugh.

After a series of close matches, the Quake 4 tournament is drawing to an exciting end. socrates_ goes down fighting to fox in probably the closest two maps of the tournament. Edged out by one frag on each map, in the case of Phrantic, 16hp while he was shooting fox with the lightning gun, the seemingly obsessive perfectionist who was the last American hope in the tournament is now on spectator status as Europe battles it out for first place. Cooller is now the Upper Bracket finalist, and awaits for his next challenge to survive the lower bracket melee. I'm going to first predict the lower bracket finals and then speculate for the next two rounds, which, while unprofessional, is the only way to possibly keep up for the rest of the days match ups.

Lower Bracket Finals:

Sweden Magnus 'fox' Olsson vs. Sweden Karl 'fooKi' Johansson
Prefired Winner - Magnus 'fox' Olsson

This match can definately go the distance of three maps, with both of these players being very solid and tested competitors. fooKi managed to edge out American favorite socrates_ by a total of two frags, and fox dances out of a solid battle with Ztrider. One thing to look out for with fooKi is his crazy rocket game close up, but with fox's past performances, you can assume he is complete and utter dominance without even seeing him play. fooKi is a respectable pick for the match, but fox has destroyed his competition, even some of the stronger competitors in the tournament in merely two maps. If this ends up as a blow out, don't be to surprised, fox is an animal in more than just named rights.

5th Place Runoff Match:

Sweden Alex 'fnatic.Ztrider' Ingarv vs. United States Jason 'socrates_' Sylka
Prefired Winner - Jason 'socrates_' Sylka

I am going to get called biased for this prediction but I stand by it. socrates_ is a talented player, if not merely insanely determined. When I watched this man miss about two beeps of a lightning gun shot compared to the thirty he hit, he looked almost devasted at his failure. I had heard he was a perfectionist and was amusing to watch simply because of his determination, but its so true that its scary. Ztrider has definately killed any myth that the PK players were stuck in that game, and the only person who seems to believe that himself is Wombat of 3D, but Ztrider is going to have to deal with a blood thirsty American player, and you know what happens when Americans get bloodthirsty? Rockets get launched. This one should go three maps, I doubt anything less, but socrates_ is looking to edge out a great competitor, and that sacrificial lamb will have to be Ztrider.

Consolation Finals (Speculated):

Sweden Johan 'toxic' Quick vs. Sweden Magnus 'fox' Olsson
Prefired Winner - Johan 'toxic' Quick

You can't mess with toxic. Unless of course you're Cooller, but thats a different story. Watching toxic play of the course of this tournament you can tell he is a man of being just superior to his competition. His Phrantic game makes me wish the map was never created, as he completely dominates it. His railgun is rail none, excuse the pun. His lightning gun is probably at 100% accuracy throughout the entire tournament, and his rockets are predetermined to throw you in the air for him to nail the combo kill with. Its actually scary. I know that fox has had plenty of experience against toxic, but that goes both ways, toxic is going to wreck his whole house.

Championship Finals (Speculated):

Russia Anton 'cooller' Singov vs. Sweden Johan 'toxic' Quick
Prefired Winner - Anton 'cooller' Singov

As great as toxic is, cooller is just that much better. He's a household name, is gaming that is, but its true. Even the CSer's know who cooller is, and thats not because of clever ABIT marketing either, because he's basically divine at the art of DM. After watching the heated chat between these two, I know that we're going to see another great game, but I think cooller was capible of clearing the fifteen kill deficit on the second map, and I think you'll see him make a similiar comeback after toxic leads for a few minutes with a rail on his map choice. Look for cooller to pull out all of the stops, and for toxic to find himself at a lose as he ends up in a second place finish.
