Quake: EC XII Playoff Report: j4rno > toxic [2:1]

By: Alex Grantz - Published February 01, 2006 at 7:18 PM EST - Writer Archive
In three intense maps, j4rno proves yet again that he is a major force to be reckoned with by knocking out toxic from the EuroCup to advance to the next round.

Aftermath Report
Match: j4rno vs toxic
Event: EuroCup XII Playoffs Lower Round Two

[TMP2] The Lost Fleet
Toxic picked the first map to be played, and as usual he chose Fleet.  He has shown time and time again his dominance on this map; mostly due to his incredible rail aim.

To start off the match, j4rno is able to pickup the rail gun and yellow armor.  As j4rno makes his way around the map to the other YA, he sees that toxic has taken it and is nearby.  With some outstanding rail aim, j4rno manages to hit toxic 3 times to begin the game and take the lead 1-0.  Shortly thereafter, j4rno follows up with another rail kill and a lightning gun kill.  After these first few skirmishes, j4rno is left with little health and toxic takes down j4rno with his lightning gun to get on the board.

At this point, j4rno has a complete lock on the mega health, and does not give it up throughout the match.  This certainly has some consequences for toxic, but he makes up for it by continually grabbing the yellow armors.

After some quick conversion frags by toxic, j4rno is able to drop down to the mega health and pick it up.  But shortly after he exits through the teleporter, toxic mets him with 2 precision rail shots to wipe the mega health away and gain another frag.  The score at this point is now 5-3 in favor of toxic.

J4rno continues to have some great control of the mega and manages to grab a few armors, but continually is outgunned by toxic.  When the score is at 8-3, j4rno is finally able to capitalize on superb rail aim and takes toxic down.  Right after the kill j4rno has an easy chance for a conversion frag, but poor weapon choice and a couple of missed shots allows toxic to beat him down with his machine gun all the way down to 17 points of health before j4rno is able to finally get the conversion frag.  With his momentum slowed, j4rno still manages to get a couple more kills before toxic’s rail again overpowers him.  Toxic continued to allow j4rno to get the mega, but plays very smart the rest of the game.  He keeps his distance and uses his rail skills to defend himself.  Even though j4rno is clearly getting items, toxic uses the items as bait and rails j4rno right as he picks them up.  Toxic keeps a comfortable lead to the end and takes the first map.

[TMP2] The Lost Fleet
Surprisingly, both players end up picking Fleet.  J4rno may have lost the first time around, but he certainly did not play badly.  If he could land a few more rails and get the upper hand in the fights, the game could be easily swayed to his favor.

J4rno’s round starts off very well as he gets the mega health, shotgun, and swipes the rail away from toxic just before he is about to take it.  A couple shotgun shots later, j4rno has taken the lead and has the mega and an armor to protect him.  However, toxic grabs a lightning gun off the spawn, and locks j4rno down and quickly takes away all of j4rno’s health and ties the game up at 1.  Toxic follows up with a rail kill, and it looks as if toxic might be able to run away with the map.

A turning point early in the match comes when j4rno is waiting in the pit for the mega health to spawn.  As toxic comes to battle j4rno and take the mega, his supreme positioning on j4rno is unable to give him the advantage.  J4rno uses some very nicely placed rockets on the ceiling to knock down toxic’s health by a staggering amount, and forces him to retreat.  J4rno is able to take the mega health and escape a very dangerous situation, and at the same time knocks his opponent’s health down considerably.

The next time the players meet, j4rno takes down the Swede as he jumps off of the jump pad with 2 rail shots making the score 3-3.  J4rno continues to control the mega health, and he almost has a double stack situation when he is hit by multiple rails from toxic bringing his health down into the double digits.  This happens many times through the next few minutes, but toxic is never able to capitalize on his shots.  If he would have been more aggressive and pursued j4rno with his lightning gun, he would have certainly gotten some kills during this period.  Because of toxic’s cautious play, j4rno is able to hold him off long enough to regain health and armor many times, and finally to get a frag on toxic.

At this point the two players exchange frags, and have very close battles.  At the 7:30 mark, toxic is finally able to grab a mega health, but j4rno has already cushioned himself with multiple yellow armors and is able to take down toxic.  A crucial turn-around happens shortly after when toxic kills j4rno right as the mega health spawns.  Toxic gets the mega health and proceeds to get another conversion frag.  J4rno plays it smart for the next few minutes, and waits for his opportunity.  Finally, j4rno’s aim comes through and he is able to frag toxic with multiple rail shots.  He gets a couple quick kills after this, and never falters the rest of the match.

Galang
When this match started, it appeared that toxic was going to take a commanding lead and never let go of it.  Toxic started the map by grabbing the mega health and the yellow armor, and went to work on j4rno with his lightning gun about a minute into the game.  Toxic immediately follows up with more kills and the score is 6-0 in just 3 minutes of game play.

With around 10 minutes left in the game, it appeared that j4rno was about to mount a comeback when he took all three powerups consecutively.  He was double stacked and looking to score his first frag.  Toxic shut him down with some nice rail action and took away all of his armor and left him with little health.  However, j4rno would gain timing of the red armor and take this vital item almost every time.

Just before the 8 minute mark, j4rno hits a rail and goes on the offensive and goes in close versus toxic.  His rockets put him up on the board for the first time in the game.  This frag would start the comeback run for j4rno.  In just a couple minutes, j4rno will get a few more kills and add on a few more conversion frags with deadly accurate rail shots and well placed rockets.  J4rno is truly on a roll at this point and is still on the hunt while keeping control of the red armor and taking most of the mega healths.  At one point, toxic’s rail puts j4rno to 9 health, but j4rno quickly makes the frag, picks up the mega health, and races to the red armor where he stacks back up to full strength.  The score at this point is 11-7.

Near the end of the game, toxic starts to fight back.  At the 2 minute mark, the score is 15-10 in j4rno’s favor, but toxic has the advantage.  J4rno is on the run and attempts to hide and drain the clock any chance he gets.  He is semi-successful at this, and takes off at least a minute from the clock in this way.  Toxic eventually finds him hiding by the jump pad by the rocket launcher, and j4rno desperately tries to throw out defensive rockets, but ends up killing himself with a rocket shot to the wall.

Toxic is racing around the map trying to find j4rno in the last minute of the game, but j4rno finds some places to hide, and even surprises toxic up close with the shotgun and takes him down.  This frag secures the map, and subsequently the match, for j4rno.

Final Thoughts
J4rno has shown throughout the EuroCup that he is a top dueler in Quake 4, and now with his victories in the playoffs, including this huge win against toxic, he has proved himself yet again.  He showed a focused cool throughout the matches, had great map control, and was able to match toxic's aim in the last two maps.  His level of play is up to par with the rest of the players, and he will continue to win and surprise people throughout the upcoming year.
