Quake: A Viewers Guide to LanWar's Quake Tournament

By: Mark Cheben - Published June 14, 2006 at 3:08 AM EDT - Writer Archive
LanWar, the first WSVG event, will be only the second major Quake 4 tournament held in the United States.
With six months passing between CPL Winter and now, no one truly knows where the Quake pros stand. The two small LAN events held since the CPL established the basic North American hierarchy: the Finals of GGL’s Americup 2 Quake 4 season where Jason "socrates_" Sylka beat Jared "cha0ticz" Cugno and the subsequent V-Sports Allstar Game that saw the tables turned as Cungo defeated Sylka.

However, there are several players waiting to capitalize on the current state of North American Quake. Three non NA players will be in Kentucky to try to win the event: Meng "RocketBoy" Yang from China, Alessandro "Stermy" Avallone from Italy and Ivo “forever” Lindhout from the Netherlands. This will mark the first large tournament that Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel and Avallone will participate in since the CPL World Tour finals where they took first and third respectively.

As this is the first WSVG event and no players have earned Series points, seedings will be determined by a ‘weighted random lottery.’ Considering that the seeds for CPL Summer will be based on the results from this tournament, the nature of the seeding will yield uneven results for those attending CPL Summer and designs on Quake 4 greatness.

The tournament will be a single elimination bracket until only 32 teams are left. Then when the bracket is at 32 it becomes a double elimination bracket. The tournament will be played on the following maps: Phrantic, Galang, Monsoon
