through Rocketboy? At QuakeCon I talked with Rocketboy about my situation, as after Dreamhack [Summer] I didn't extend contract with Steel Series. After 2 weeks Rocketboy got a new offer from Razer for me. It really helps me. :) Why have you decided to sign with the Razer team? It's a big company with a nice staff, players, and awesome products! :> How does it feel to be on the same team as Rocketboy? I know him from WCG 2002, we both are Chinese and we are very old friends. It feels like playing in team China - very happy! :) What will the Razer team provide you that others such as Steel could not? Traveling, devices and support without salary. But there's a very nice atmosphere here. Will you have to use all Razer peripherals for your events? Do you normally use them to begin with? If not, will it effect your gameplay? Yep and I've already started using the Mantis Control mousepad, Tarantula keyboard and Barracuda headphones, and I really like them. I haven't yet switched my mouse to Krait/Coopherhead, because I've played for 2 years on ms 1.1a. Shape and motion are very different and will certainly decrease my aim. :\ After joining Razer, you also joined the professional Chinese organization Hacker Gaming. Why did you decide to join the Hacker gaming team? They've given me managing and salary support, and Hacker Gaming is a Chinese team :). What are the differences in sponsorship between Razer and Hacker? What will you obtain from each? Razer is my main supporter and sponsor, they provide me best hardware and send me to international events. Hacker is my clan, I just play under their clantag and they pay me. You and Rocketboy are currently the only two Chinese professional Quake players. Do you feel there are any upcoming or future players in China or other parts of Asia that could reach the professional level? In China there's a very big gap between the usual gamers to someone of Rocketboy's level. Nobody can reach that level because of hard conditions for playing and getting sponsorship. My play level is all because I'm studying in Russia and I can practice with TOP Russian players. Is there any hope for new players to reach this level? Very hard, almost impossible. While Quake's banishment from China has been a huge detractor for new players to get into the scene, the deathmatch genre has never really been popular in any of the Asian countries to begin with. Why do you think this is? Quake is a very hard-to-play game, you need spend so much time to understand how to play and you must use your brain. There is no luck, no random shots. It's very hard for beginners, so they just give up after the first 10-20 minutes of playing. As well, Chinese gamers more like real-simulation FPS (Counter-Strike, RTCW, etc), as well as RTS-games, of course. The Chinese government banned Quake in 2003. It's decreased so many players, because there haven't been anymore events in China. You mentioned you're at the level of play you are now because you've been able to study in Russia. Does the local Russian scene live up to the hype? Could any of the Asian countries reach that caliber of play? Yeah, it does. There's a lot of high skilled players in Russia and I think if they could get sponsorship, they could be top 12 in the world. Players such as NoBap, Evil, Enemy, keep3r, vassek, etc. This is with many of Russia's top players retiring as well, uNkind, death, Pele, LeXeR, etc. What happened to them? Is it possible they'll come back for the World Tour next year? I don't think so, all because of age. They all already have work and other, more important things in their life. |
