Quake: WSVG 2006 Quake 4 Finals Day 1 Melee

By: Nick Bee - Published December 09, 2006 at 12:17 AM EST - Writer Archive
One of the most competitive Quake 4 tournaments to ever take place in the United States is about to be underway. Cutting the fat and giving us some premium match-ups right out the gates, WSVG fields eight of the world’s best players playing for a top prize of $20,000, a Rolex, and a brand new PC.
The obvious favorite heading into the tournament Johan “SK.toxic” Quick faces off against Anton "mouz.Cooller" Singov in the opening match. The visa issues that prevented Quick’s rival from playing in London’s WSVG back in October will not be a problem this time around. His recent appearance at the Ponzan Quake 4 Invitational saw him placing third after being defeated handedly by socrates_ on both Phrantic and Placebo Effect. On the other hand Toxic has done nothing but dominate as of late and should bring his amazing play. Recently taking first in the Intel Summer Championships, Quakecon, KODE5 finals and WSVG London, he looks to take his fifth tournament and continue the sweep.

Even with a headliner of that caliber, the second match is pretty good as well. Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendell against Rafik "LoSt-CaUzE" Bryant. Still without a top place finish in a major event this year Fatal1ty looks to take one down early and prevent a drop to the lower bracket early on. A heart-breaking defeat in the finals of rAge 2006 at the hands of “LoSt-CaUzE” left him with a 2nd place finish in South Africa, something he probably hasn’t forgotten. The wins at rAge, KODE5 USA, and a 3rd place finish at WSVG London give the impression that the formerly underestimated LoSt-CaUzE will not be an underdog this time around.

The final two matches Jason "Socrates" Sylka vs. Alexander "Ztrider" Ingarv and James "fnatic.TooGoood" Harding against 3rd. Alessandro "stermy” Avallone promise equally thrilling competition.

SK.Toxic > mouz.Cooller
Fatal1ty > EG.LoSt-CaUzE
mouz.socrates_ > fnatic//Ztrider
Stermy > fnatic//TooGood

SK.Toxic > Fatal1ty
mouz.socrates_ > Stermy

mouz.socrates_ > SK.toxic

That is my prediction if it's single elimination. I not, I still predict socrates as the winner, just through different matchups.

Watched Stermy play Galang against Toogood yesterday when I was up at the WSVG Finals and man was he on fire with the railgun. Really oppressive at certain points in the match.

Finals are completely focused on a TV show production, so there is no live broadcasting there which definitely makes spectating live a bit less fun. It should be very interesting to see what the end product looks like though.

Toxic is untouchable.

Every event he just lets everyone know why he is #1.

People don't randomly lose in Quake 4 like some other competitive eSport games.

Toxic is just 2 steps ahead at all times.

I wonder how much Fatality is studying Toxic's patterns tonight. I would be surpised if Fat does not take at minimum 1 map. Should be a good matchup tomorrow.

Cooller needs to retire from gaming.

Amazing showing by Jonathan Wendel.

Taking 3 maps from what appeared to be an invincible opponent in Johan Quick.

Thought Wendel was going to pull a win out of nowhere and upset Quick there for a second. Though the advantage in Quicks' favor was just far too great for the eSports poster boy to over come. Great games though. Good luck to Wendel in the future, and believe me when I say that this is only the beginning. The name Fatal1ty will not go down without a fight. He will show the world again why he is Fatal1ty, and his name is known by the whole gaming world. Just a great showing.

Fatal1ty made sure there was no Quick, and flawless victory for Toxic this match.

Though Johan Quick did win, perhaps we have seen a flaw in the machine that is Toxic?
