Quake: WSVG Louisville Player Preview

By: Joe Szymkowicz - Published June 21, 2007 at 11:06 AM EDT - Writer Archive
WSVG Louisville will begin today, and will showcase some of Quake 4's best. From the looks of the registered competitors, spectators will be in for quite a show.

Today will mark the first day of WSVG Louisville, one of the largest LAN events of the summer for the Quake community. The event will feature some of the best Quake 4 players in the world and is sure to be full of some extremely exciting matches. With this many talented players in the field, it is hard to even say which player is favored to win the event. Some of the players attending are:

United States Lost-Cauze
Rafik “Lost-Cauze” Bryant, the winner of the recent Warfactory tournament, comes into this summer playing stronger than ever before. Joining Team H20 just a few weeks ago, Bryant is one of the heavily favored North Americans that has a shot at the title this weekend, but can stand up to the rest of the of the world?

United States chance
Chance “chance” Lacina is another North American player that has consistently been playing well, and can compete with any other player in the world at any time. After giving Lost-Cauze a run for his money at the Warfactory tournament, chance

United States DaHanG
From other players at the WSVG Bootcamp in Louisville, Tim “DaHanG” Fogerty is looking extremely good in practice, and is considered one of the North American players that could possibly win the tournament.

United States icel0re
Dave “icel0re” Ritson has been playing exceptionally well in the past few months and should finish in the top tier of players. In addition to this tournament, he has hosted the WSVG Bootcamp, played in the WSVG Online Qualifier and played at the Warfactory event in St. Louis.

Canada gellehsak
Coming off a disappointing fifth place finish at Warfactor, Andy “gellehsak” Ryder is looking to redeem himself after an unlucky start to the summer. Last year, we saw him take win ESWC Canada and ninth at WSVG Lanwar. He’s already proved he can stand out among the best in North America, but can he turn it back around after a bad start?

Sweden toxic
After some major visa issues made it unclear as to whether he would be able to play, Johan “toxic” Quick made it to the states and will be attending the event today. After winning the ESWC Sweden qualifier, Johan is considered the best player in the field and looks to have a very strong chance of winning the whole event.

Sweden fojji
Magnus “fojji (fox)” Olsson is just coming off a second place finish at the ESWC Sweden competition where he lost to toxic, who was playing at an unbelievable level throughout the whole tournament. A week before that though, Magnus placed first in the Swedish Nation League over fellow Swedes sorax, PURRI and ooze. We can expect for him to finish very well in the tournament and play some exciting matches.

Poland av3k
Maciej "av3k" Krzykowski is the young Polish phenom that is shocking the world by winning big tournaments against big names, such as his first place finishes in both the i30 tournament and the PGA International event back in 2006. Be sure to watch the young dueler this tournament, as he is expected to be one of the top finishers for the event.

Belarus Cypher
Alex "Cypher" Yanushevsky is another player to keep an eye on that is bringing some major competition to the tournament. After joining Fnatic last year, he has since taken second at the ESWC 2006 Finals, took 5th at QuakeCon 2006 and 2nd at the ASUS Spring Cup 2006.

Russia cooller
Less than 3 weeks ago, Anton "Cooller" Singov won the ESWC Russia qualifier over a decently talented group. Before that, he showed off his skills at i30, when he played a fierce match against av3k in the finals. Little is known about the Russian’s practice leading up to the event, but like always, you can expect him to

Netherlands forever
The last we saw of Ivo “forever” Lindhout, was at the i30 tournament in the UK, where he nearly stunned the winner of the tournament, av3k, in the semifinals. Keeping to a similar regimen as he did before the i30 tournament, he’s been practicing heavily with a group of North American players at the WSVG Bootcamp in Louisville. Can he manage to find the same results in this tournament? I guess you’ll have to watch to find out.

United Kingdom Garpy
Gareth “Garpy” Marshall, recent winner of the ESWC UK qualifier is considered to be the best dueler in the UK at the moment. Garpy has been staying sharp playing in ClanBase EuroCup tournament, just recently taking out rising German start Peter “Cymozz” Sellmaier. Most notably though, Garpy was able to beat him on Ravage, a map seldom lost by Sellmaier.

China RazerJ
Zhibo "RazerJ" Fan has been laying low for most of 2007. It’ll be interesting to see if Zhibo can become a darkhorse for the tournament, but not likely when he hasn’t played in a Quake 4 LAN event in about a year.
