Quake: Quake Wars Invades QuakeCon 2007

By: Joe Szymkowicz - Published July 31, 2007 at 7:43 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Though still in beta stages, the Quake Wars tournament at Quake will carry a hefty prize of $22,000 for the winner, drawing a lot of North American, as well as, European talent.

While it's only been out in beta form for a relatively small amount of time, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has already become very popular with those looking to continue playing squad-based shooters. So much so that QuakeCon is offering quite a large prize for it's Quake Wars 6v6 competition this year. Here is what the prizes for the tournament will look like:

First Place: $22,000
Second Place: $16,000
Third Place: $8,000
Fourth Place: $4,000

In the past few days GotFrag has been able to sit down with some of the top teams coming to the event and see what each of them brings to the tournament and how they expect to do in the coming days. Let's take a look.

20ID

United States Jason "Radea" Longshore
United States Jaime "v1D" Medina
United States Chris "chris" Mullen
Canada Ryan "nothx" Moore
United States Travis "conflict" Stock
United States Josh "Silver" Cole

A recent addition for the 20ID organization, all of their players came from top teams in the original Enemy Territory, including United 5 and Pandemic. Radea, the team's captain, played for the 20ID RTCW:ET team. They've been practicing regularly and have been performing at or near the top of the game so far.

20ID: Garbage Day

United States Jack "bub" Stangler
Canada Chris "ginc" Polan
United States Greer "Daskro" Carper
United States Taz "SpAz" Carper
United States Jerrod "ravenwebb" Webb
United States Andrew "krispey" Hearin

With some members going back as far as Battlefield 1942 and three of them winning $40,000 at the Battlefield 2 Championship Gaming Invitational in 2006, this team may be less experienced at ET than their practice partners, but their long history of squad-based competition and constant scrimmaging should help them to keep up with the competition.

50 Calibre

United States Eric "Darklord" Mallon
United States Michael "Uno" Wade
United States Gregory "mailman" Yingling
United States Jeffrey "Thump4" McShane
United States Micah "Micahwave" Ernst
United States Christopher "Welchiz" Welch
United States Kevin "Kev" McShane

Practicing extremely hard since they formed their team about seven weeks ago, 50 Caliber has some very talented players on their roster. For starters, having a player like mailman, with his long list of accomplishments for squad-based games, on your team definitely can't hurt. Uno and Darklord both have strong Tribes and Battlefield experience together, playing for Team5150. Before writing this, Eric "Darklord" Mallon told me "We have been scrimming Demise a lot, and match up very evenly with them when we are able to get our 6 on. We have played HOT a few times, and they are certainly heads and tails above everyone else right now."
