Quake: QuakeCon Wrapup

By: Marc Turner - Published August 06, 2007 at 12:10 PM EDT - Writer Archive
A fun filled week of QuakeCon 2007 has wrapped up and the Europeans finish big.
Big Weekend for Europeans at QuakeCon
QuakeCon 2007 took place this past weekend, August 2nd-5th, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas,Texas. As usual this year’s QuakeCon was mostly a chance for the deathmatch community to gather and celebrate all things id and Quake. A host of sponsors, games and parties made it another successful event despite a slightly smaller turnout than years past.

Several announcements from Quake developer id, including all id games being made available on the internet content delivery system Steam and the announcement of retail release of ET:QuakeWars in October, made for a nice event for the Quakers. The event finished up with exciting finals, in a grand room, with a couple thousand gamers and free beer.

QuakeCon 2007 Quad Damage Tournament
Teams and players that traveled the great ocean to get to QuakeCon this past week have been duly rewarded. Despite delays from tournament software woes, missing players and changes in tournament structure, the unique Quad Damage Quake tournament finished up with the steely iceman Johan "toxjq" Quick taking the championship.

Tim "EG|DaHanG" Fogarty was the top placing American in 3rd place. Magnus "fojji" Olsson fought well on the main stage Saturday evening in front of a big crowd of spectators, but to no avail, as the mighty toxjq took the crown in a tournament spread across the four different versions of Quake.

▪ 1st Place - $20,000 - Johan "toxjq" Quick
▪ 2nd Place - $12,500 - Magnus "fojji" Olsson
▪ 3rd Place - $7,500 - Tim "EG|DaHanG" Fogarty
▪ 4th Place - $5,000 - Mikael "PURRI" Tarvainen

QuakeCon 2007 ET: QuakeWars Tournament
The first ever Enemy Territory: QuakeWars tournament also finished up with the Euros on top as Dignitas came back from the lower brackets to take down American squad Team Hot in two matches. Demise finished a respectable 4th considering the team had not played the game in beta before the tournament.

1st Place: $22,000 - Team-Dignitas
2nd Place: $16,000 - Team HOT
3rd Place: $8,000 - Check-Six
4th Place: $4,000 - Demise

QuakeCon 2007 AllStar Tournament
QuakeCon was also host to an AllStar tournament put together on site and casted by Rod "Slasher" Breslau and Stuart "TosspoT" Saw on GGL's video on demand coverage. The tournament featured the North American players pitted against the Europeans in classic CTF and TDM formats. The Europeans once again took home the the top spot and prizes donated by sponsors on site.
