Magnus "fojji" Olsson had a chance to speak with GotFrag about the upcoming WSVG Toronto event and his experiences with Quake. ![]() Alias: fojji (fox) Age: 23 Location: Norrköping, Sweden Current Organizaion: Free Players Organization How did you start out with competitive gaming? In the beginning, I just went to local Quake 3 LANs and placed well in those. Eventually, I stepped it up by winning DreamHack, after which I was drafted into p1mps. Through p1mps, I got some attention and later on down the line, sponsors sponsors started to notice me :) You were a major name in Quake 3, not only as a dueler, but as a member of the famous IceClimbers clan. What are some of your favorite moments while you played Quake 3? Naturally, I had a lot of fun with iCE cLIMBERS when traveling to (and winning) TDM events. Also, I remember ESWC 2004 as one of my favorite events. One, because we won. Two, because the team was great to hang out with :) I miss fazz all too much :/ <3 Do you think the game has gotten better with the patches and updates? Absolutely, albeit very different. I sometimes feel the game has become too fast and RL-rushing plays too big of a role. There's no denying the game has come a long way though :) What do you think has held the Quake 4 community back from growing as big as Quake 3 did? Probably system requirements when the game was released. Had it been tweakable (ie r_forceambient) straight out of the box, more people would probably have stuck with it. Also things such as not being able to connect to servers if you don't have all the PAKs might've scared quite a few beginners away. Why do you think Sweden is generally such a good country for gamers, specifically first-person shooters? We're a very high-tech country. I think many Swedish households started getting computers quite early compared to other countries (through reasons such as work, tax deductible). Of course, our internet infrastructure makes playing easier and more fun. Constantly playing with LAN pings makes online play very nice. How did you like the format of this year's QuakeCon tournament? Would you like them to keep it for next year? It was definitely something different. I would like to see them host the same format again, though I doubt they will. It was refreshing to learn the old Quakes, and I had loads of fun with QW especially (shoutouts to www.quakeworld.nu and #qwrookie ;) ) How do you feel going into WSVG Toronto? I feel pretty confident, although I've mixed up my game a bit :) I just started experimenting with mouse acceleration a few days ago, but it's starting to feel okay. I'll probably end up using it for this tournament, at least. I've heard you say that, in your opinion, Johan (toxjq) is the best Quake 4 player in the world; do you expect to see him and av3k and in the Finals at Toronto? Do you think he can take down the Polish dueler? I'm quite sure he will :) Av3k played extremely well in Louisville. I have my doubts that he will be able to play as well this time around. It's unfortunate that they will face each other so early in the brackets, though I'm sure it will be a great game. What are your plans for the future? Will you try playing Unreal Tournament 3 like so many of the other duelers? I have every intention to keep playing professionally. If it means moving to UT3 for a while, so be it. I have my sights set on the upcoming Quake title though ;) It already gives me butterflies in my stomach. Hopefully it wont be too many years down the road. Is there anyone you want to give a shoutout to or thank? Thanks to the Fatal1ty brand for their continued support <3 Also, thank you for conducting this interview :) |
