Quake: WSVG Toronto Player Preview

By: Joe Szymkowicz - Published August 23, 2007 at 4:09 PM EDT - Writer Archive
With just about all of the world's top Quake 4 duelers attending, the WSVG Toronto stop will not only be an amazing spectacle of competitive eSports, but it will also give many a good idea of how the Grand Finals will play out in November.

With a bit of a break since WSVG Dallas and QuakeCon, players are back into their Quake 4 practice routines and bootcamping schedules. This time, the complete lineup of the world's top Quake 4 duelers will be in Toronto to battle it out in another stop on the WSVG series. With as many top players that are going, it looks to be a sneak peek at what's to come for the WSVG Grand Finals, that will be held in Sweden later this year.

One of the more interesting facets of this tournament will be the ongoing battle between Johan "toxjq" Quick and Maciej "av3k" Krzykowski, and their fight for bragging rights as the top Quake 4 dueler in the world. Due to extreme circumstances and scheduling conflicts, it's been quite some time since we've actually seen both players face each other in top form. This will be a true test of each player's skill and may clear up the question; Who is the best Quake 4 dueler in the world? It's odd that WSVG has decided to put them in the same side of the bracket, but it means that viewers will just find out the answer to this question a bit sooner than normal.

Sweden Johan "toxjq" Quick - 1900 pts

Recent Achievements: 1st, QuakeCon 2007, 1st WSVG Dallas, 2nd WSVG Louisville, 1st ESWC Sweden Qualifier

Though he lost to av3k at the WSVG Louisville tournament, Quick is still considered by many to be the top Quake 4 player in the world. He is back and this time, he will most likely come prepared and with tons of time bootcamping these past weeks. After losing only one map at WSVG Dallas, to Cypher in the Upper Bracket, Quick is trying to win his second WSVG stop of the summer. The only question is; Will he be able to beat av3k?

Poland Maciej "av3k" Krzykowski - 1000 pts

Recent Achievements: 1st ESWC Grand Finals 2007, 1st WSVG Louisville, 1st i30 Multiplay

Maciej "av3k" Krzykowski, the young Polish boy-wonder, is back at another WSVG to try and continue his dominance over the Quake world after quite an impressive display at the ESWC Grand Finals last month. This, as well as as his 1st place finish at WSVG Louisville make him a natural choice to win the event. There isn't much to say that hasn't been said already about av3k. He is incredibly talented, extremely dangerous, and has the potential to win any event at any given time. Expect him to finish well, as usual.

Belarus Alexey "Cypher" Yanusheuski - 1725 pts

Recent Achievements: 2nd WSVG Dallas, 3rd WSVG Louisville, 5th i30 Multiplay

The last time we saw Cypher, he was having a very successful WSVG Dallas tournament, even managing to get a map on toxjq before being sent to the Lower Bracket. Oddly enough, it was Monsoon, the map toxjc is known to do especially well on. His young age and infinite ability to keep learning the game and his opponents make him a constant threat in the Quake community. Could this be the tournament that we see a first place finish from the young Belorussian? Maybe, but you'll just have to stay tuned.

Sweden Magnus "fojji" Olsson - 1325 pts

Recent Achievements: 2nd QuakeCon 2007, 4th WSVG Dallas, 7th WSVG Louisville, 2nd ESWC Sweden Qualifier, 1st SNL Season 2 Finals

One word can be used to describe fojji; Consistency. Olsson is riding out a very successful summer, and has consistently performed well at every event this year. Starting with his first-place finish at Swedish National League Finals to the QuakeCon event earlier this month, fojji has always been one of the most consistent Quake players and has lots of natural talent. Sitting in fifth place in the series right now, Olsson should make it to Final, set to take place in his home country, Sweden.

Russia Anton "Cooller" Singov - 650 pts

Recent Achievements: 2nd ESWC Grand Finals 2007, 6th WSVG Louisville

With very little points in the WSVG series, Anton "Cooller" Singov is going to have to play tough to have a chance at the Grand Finals. Opting out of WSVG Dallas to play in the ESWC Grand Finals seemed to pay off for him leading to a second place finish, losing only to his protege av3k in the Finals. Also, taking sixth at WSVG Louisville, Singov has definitely shown that his skill has definitely not faded, now he just needs to keep it up, and make up for the points the difference to be able to have a shot at Finals.

Other than his lack of points, cooller is another player that looks extremely strong. Though he admitted in a recent interview that he hasn't enjoyed Quake 4 as much as his time playing Quake 3, he has still managed to be extremely versatile and has always placed in well in events.

United States Tim “DaHanG” Fogarty - 1525 pts

Recent Achievements: 3rd QuakeCon 2007, 3rd WSVG Dallas, 5th WSVG Louisville

Fogarty is at the top of his game right now, as well as the North American Standings. At Dallas, he took third after losing to a very strong Cypher, managing to get a map on him in the process. It is simply astonishing how fast this Quake 2 star was able to pickup and start excelling to the top of the world's Quake 4 players. At WSVG Dallas, he was able to get a map on Cypher in their Lower Bracket Finals match, and it wouldn't surprise me if DaHanG were able to beat him. If he keeps playing the way he is right now, theres no doubt in my mind that he will make it to the Finals come September.

United States Chance “chance” Lacina - 1425 pts

Recent Achievements: 5th WSVG Dallas, 4th WSVG Louisville, 2nd Warfactory

Alongside Fogarty, his EG teammate, Lacina is another player that has really emerged from the rest of the North American scene, and has managed to stay consistently in the top two position of the North American standings for quite some time. Being picked up by EG has really allowed Chance to become a better player, plus having DaHanG as a practice partner can't hurt either, right? Currently sitting fourth in the standings, chance will most likely qualify for Finals.

United States Rafik “Lost-Cauze” Bryant - 1100 pts

Recent Achievements: 6th WSVG Dallas, 9-12th WSVG Louisville, 1st Warfactory

It has been another successful year for Rafik Bryant. Debuting the new "American Steel" team at QuakeCon, starting his very own bootcamp and generally staying one of the most most successful American players in the field, Bryant has had a fairly good year. Currently sitting sixth place in the WSVG Series, Bryant has a good shot at making the WSVG Grand Finals. Rafik has one slight crack in his armor though; he hasn't really grown as a player like the rest of the American field seems to have done. With newer players becoming more and more successful, he will have to pickup his game if he wants to regain his position as the top dueler in North America.

Sweden Mikael "PURRI" Tarvainen - 0 pts

Recent Achievements: 4th QuakeCon 2007, 3rd SNL Finals

Recently acquiring sponsorship from Pro Gam3r magazine, is looking to continue his summer success and start generating some WSVG points. After a fourth place finish at QuakeCon, I wouldn't be surprised to see another top 8 finish from this talented Swedish Quaker. Even with finishing third in the Swedish National League Finals, Tarvainen still keeps getting better and better with each tournament. Though even with some really breakout performances in the upcoming events, it's going to be very hard to makeup enough points to make it to the Finals events.
