Quake: WSVG Fallout: What's Left For Quake 4?

By: Joe Szymkowicz - Published September 19, 2007 at 6:30 PM EDT - Writer Archive
What do you think was the largest factor to the WSVG's failure?

Sweden Johan "toxjq" Quick: No comment on that. But I think what all the organizations and leagues need to do for the future, is choose games that require a higher level of skill. We need to bring gaming out more mainstream, and show the world that it’s a great sport to be competing in. We won’t be successful with doing that if the leagues are changing games every year.

United States Chance "EG|chance" Lacina: They bit off more than they could chew. As a result they always seemed unorganized and disorderly. If I were to run a tournament, I would focus on making it run flawlessly and having great spectator capability rather than having a ton of games.

Sweden Magnus "fojji" Olsson: I'm sure they would have drawn a better crowd (and in turn, more revenue) if they had not picked Fight Night as a competitive game. Other than that, I'm not really familiar with the business side behind this stuff.

United States Tim "EG|DaHanG" Fogarty: I don't have any inside information, but I guess they thought they would get more help from their sponsors. They probably thought they wouldn't lose as much money as they did. I read carmac's article and he seemed to know what he was talking about: They should have hosted fewer events for more prize money, since booking the venues themselves cost a ton of money. If the WSVG took this approach, perhaps they would still be alive. Hopefully, the competitive gaming community can learn from this, because in the last few years eSports has been all over the place.

Poland Maciej "srs`av3k" Krzykowski: Without the competitive games, which drew in the spectators, there was no reason for sponsors to keep funding them. And without the funds, it's not possible to keep putting on tournaments.

United States Dave "x3o.icel0re" Ritson: WSVG's failure I think could be credited to the misallocation of funds and inconsistent practices. Over this whole summer, you heard about staff quitting, directors of different area's being fired, and new ones being brought in, problems here and there. I know everyone on their staff had the best intentions in terms of providing the best LAN experience possible to us, but there was a different feel about things this summer as opposed to last summer. It just wasn't the same.

Canada Tom "griffin" Wall: I personally think the largest factor of WSVG failure was the games they had picked. I know a lot of people don't like Quake 4 and think it's a shitty game but when watching it, I feel that it is the most interesting game to watch and easy to understand, yet it was on their TV program. I think Fight Night 2 was pretty boring to watch and I rather not watch two people playing a boxing video game when I could watch the real thing which is more interesting. I think WoW was a good pick but putting it on TV was just stupid. I tried following a WoW game at one of the events and I didn't understand anything that was going on and I've never played WoW and I couldn't imagine what people were thinking trying to watch it on TV. As an event game I thought it brought a lot of players and teams to the event, which I guess was a plus for WSVG. Guitar Hero 2 was pretty interesting to watch but I still don't think it's a competitive game for something like WSVG. So I personally think WSVG's choice of games was terrible and I think that was one of the main reasons why WSVG flopped this year.

United Kingdom Aaron-Anton "dignitas/HELL" Jones: No idea on why it failed, I don't really read up on the background or history of things. I just hear the bad news, get disappointed and think of the future as quickly and as brightly as I possibly can.

United States Jon "Dyn`Judge" Leathery: Without knowing the facts, I'm guessing someone who called the shots just didn't think it was worth their time anymore. I think it's pretty unprofessional to just drop the circuit out of nowhere. A lot of people have already purchased airline tickets for some of the other events, and now those people are screwed.

Sweden Therese "g0d-trito" Andersson: I think the problem was deep inside the organization, but I have no idea what specifically went wrong. I know Fight Night 3 hasn’t been a popular game, but I don’t think WSVG was shut down only because of that.

United States Tim "eMg-naymlis" Bowes: My guess would be their choice of games. Picking a game like WoW, which instantly sends spectators into a coma, isn't the smartest of ideas.

France Gregory "falcuma" Ollivier: I think it was just a matter of dumping way too much money on a bad selection of games. Games Media Property's partners claimed that the event was not "seen" enough, speaking in terms of media. Of course it wasn't! Guitar Hero and Fight Night were the most hyped games there, and even gamers don't have interest for those, so who gives a shit? I think if their two main games had been Counter Strike and Quake 4 or Warcraft 3 and Quake 4, it would have been amuch different story in the end.

United States James "ERMAC" Boyd: The WSVG had problems since day 1 of the 2007 series. I always knew they had money problems. They couldn't even afford to pay their admins. The tournaments themselves were not run properly (due to admins that didn’t know what was going on, servers, etc...). The best tournament they held was in Toronto. I think it was because they fired/hired some people previously?

Netherlands Jeffrey "draven" Debipersad: In my opinion, it was bad game selection, and too many stops in America. WoW and Guitar Hero are fun games to play at home, but I don't think they belong in a competitive environment such as WSVG.

United States Erika "pMs^kassi" Sinnott: Maybe they should have had less venues and smaller expectations with CGS coming out and actually picked more games that people play more frequently. I'm not sure people want to go to things events and watch others play games like Guitar Hero or Fight Night. It's could've used more team-based games like Counter-Strike or Day of Defeat.
