Quake: Quake Live: Getting Started

By: Marc Turner - Published May 01, 2009 at 10:24 PM EDT - Writer Archive
GotFrag gives a quick explanation on how to connect to the free, browser based Quake Live.

GotFrag.com - Guide to Quake Live is a series of articles dedicated to the various entry level and advanced topics within the game. Providing you with direct and to the point information is our goal.

For those who'd rather get to the point and go frag rather than wading through an in-depth analysis of advanced gameplay (don't worry, we'll still have those too), than the Guide to Quake Live is for you.

In this installment, we're going to start you out at the very beginning. Below you'll find a step-by-step visual guide to getting setup with Quake Live and hopping in your first server. Once you've played around for a little while, take a look at our other chapters and take your understanding of the game to a higher level.

Getting Started

Quake Live is taking the eSports community by storm with its 100% free browser based version of Quake III. The online modification has produced talk of a Quake revival that could surpass its previous history as the first game of PC eSports. Many of the Quake veterans of old are coming out of the woodwork to dabble in the game, some seriously talking of a renewed competitive scene.

The game also has attracted many newcomers to the title, being so easily accessible and free. The game is easy to download and play, the sign up process is painless and you can be playing in a matter of just a few minutes.

The initial download of the game begins as a live training and ranking session begins, so the download wait time has been practically removed. this is a huge plus and a nice change from the old days of downloading online games for hours or even days before you could actually play. The training session also allows the game to calculate your individual skill in order to match you with players equally skilled once downloading and training are complete.

The first thing you will see when going to www.quakelive.com will be the front page with the "Play NOW Free" button. Click that button to get started.

Next you will see the signup forms asking for email, Nickname and password. Fill this out accordingly and confirm on second page.

Once you have filled out the signup forms and have confirmed on second page, an email will be sent to the address you provided. That email will contain a link and an account confirmation code. Either click the link in email or enter your confirm account number in the window shown below in screenshot.
