Starcraft 2: SC II First Impressions: Terran

By: Lucas Bigham - Published August 07, 2007 at 8:31 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Today, GotFrag’s very own Lucas “Colbi” Bigham will give his first impressions of the playable Starcraft II demo at BlizzCon.
For many years we have waited for a sequel to one of the greatest RTS games to have been developed. Here in 2007 at the Anaheim Convention Center we are now able to get our hands on just a taste to what this sequel has to offer.

I sat down next hundreds if not thousands of eager fans yelling, screaming, and in complete awe of the sights and sounds of Blizzard’s new creation known as Starcraft II. Sitting down on the chair you realize that it has finally arrived. You put your headphones on and lay your hands on that keyboard waiting for the loading screen to complete. Finally! You see your command center or nexus in view with your peons sitting there and waiting for your command. The long wait is over and the game is finally here.

Terran:

For the most part, I was only able to use a limited number of units during my time spent in the Starcraft II area. This article will not discuss each and every unit available for use from both races, so my article might perhaps seem incomplete.

This was the race that I was the most eager to play. Being a terran player myself I was interested in seeing what kinds of changes Blizzard had planned for my favorite race.

Out of the two playable races at BlizzCon, the terran seemed to be the one that felt much less like the original. While many units, buildings, and various other features of the race were all still intact, the models have been drastically changed. At first I was skeptical, my mind could not focus and playing this race did not even feel like I was playing Starcraft anymore. That lasted at least for a couple of moments up until I moved out of my base with my first offensive force of marines.

Let’s begin with the SCV, the heart and soul of the terrans economy, and first unit that I had the opportunity to select in my first demo experience. In original Starcraft I was a fan of the larger size of this unit compared to the probe or the drone. However, in Starcraft II it seems as though this unit’s size has been slightly reduced. Maybe I was lazy, but I always felt that the SCV was the easiest to do a split with which was one of the reasons why I chose to stick with terran.

blizzard didn't create a breakthrough game by sucking at developing, so i fully expect that they will work out balance issues....that's why they do stuff like this ^_^

#12 Starcraft could be a box of popcorn and its going to outsell almost every pc game made to date. This game is one of the rare cases where their hardcore gamers are probably the largest playerbase this game has to, and will be, appealing to.

So are spidermines completely out of the question now or is there a possibility that they might just add it during beta testing.

who cares about the terran, whats good with the ZERG? they are the tightest race and defintly needed some blancing against the other races. i hope they implement a healing unit, as well as a better flying unit or atleast make mutalisks cheaper.

and i agree with the writer here, it looked like the protoss had way too many new units that were just too good. Zealots were amazing in sc1, they could outbeat a group of 12 marines with only 6 of them, and now they have an ability where they teleport right in front of you. and that mothership, i hope to god they balance the crap out of that.

How can you judge a game like this, (even one race) so early before it's release? Obviously the balancing issues are not near ready.

#12 if they wanted to sell more games then make games with not as good graphics so more people can play them on their bad computers with the possibility of them being really fun

Blizzard is not like Valve/EA, they actually do a good job of the games they make. I think Starcraft 2 will be no exception.
