Starcraft 2: SC II First Impressions: Terran

The marines, though fairly weak without medics, almost seemed perhaps stronger and easier to control. I found myself able to micromanage my marines with relative ease against my opponent’s zealot in a much easier fashion than in the original Starcraft.

Putting my marines together with a few medics made the battles all that much sweeter. The strength and effectiveness of the marine and medic combo has returned in Starcraft II.

Moving onto the gas guzzlers of the terran arsenal that can be produced from a starport or factory. The first unit that I had the chance to check out was the Viking, a unit that can be most compared to a goliath, but worse. Although, one benefit to this unit was that it could both walk on ground like a goliath and fly in the air like a wraith or valkyrie.

It was very unfortunate news for the terran fans to hear that the vultures and their beloved spider mines would most likely not be making a return in the sequel. When I produced these units early in the game, I just felt like I was wasting my money on a unit that was not very effective at all against other ground units.

The siege tank, one of the most recognized units in the whole terran force will be making a return. While the unit has a similar feel to its earlier predecessor, it just did not seem nearly as effective. The splash damage of the tank seemed weak, and I found myself not being able to cause much damage at all.

Now moving onto the starports, by far the coolest thing about these new units is that they could turn into a flying production ship. While the production ship is slow, it will certainly come in handy when your air force is all the way across the map from your starports.

The Predator, a fast ship that can be considered similar in speed to a wraith. This unit also be put to use well if your strategy involves a lot of harassing and hit and run tactics. The Nomad, the medic of the air can repair your units in battle along with being able to see any cloaked units. One of the units that have been the least changed is the infamous Battlecruiser, the king of the terran air fleet. This popular ship unit remains slow, but continue to deal a similar amount of damage that we have grown to love.

When asked, the general conscience seemed to all agree on the current playable version of terran at BlizzCon was in need of some balance work. Several units just did not have the same spark that a majority of the protoss units seemed to hold. However, I have much faith in the Blizzard development team and I expect them to make the changes needed.
