Starcraft 2: SC II First Impressions: Protoss

By: Lucas Bigham - Published August 12, 2007 at 11:39 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Today, GotFrag’s very own Lucas “Colbi” Bigham will give his first impressions of the Protoss race from the playable Starcraft II demo at BlizzCon.
While attending BlizzCon I had the opportunity to play not only one race, but two. The second race that I was given the chance to play as protoss. This was certainly the more popular race at the event. Perhaps this was due to the fact that protoss had units that were simply just more fun to play. How could you go wrong with giant blue lasers, lightning storms, and teleportation?

In the original Starcraft, protoss players are some of the most loyal of their race. They tend to have long debates on strategies, build orders, and anything else that can be argued about. They support their favorite protoss professional gamers to the fullest even when they aren’t winning. Even though, they may complain that protoss versus zerg is imbalanced, they continue to remain supportive of aiur.

Protoss:

For the most part, I was only able to use a limited number of units during my time spent in the Starcraft II area. This article will not discuss each and every unit available for use from both races, so my article might perhaps seem incomplete.

Even after BlizzCon, I am still in awe by Blizzard’s unique ability to still give Starcraft II the same feel that we have grown up loving in the original Starcraft. The protoss race is a prime example of this. When I first sat down to play Starcraft II as protoss I was shocked to see how much this race played like the original. While there were some slight changes to units and buildings, the race still felt the same.

The Probe, the little robotic worker of protoss has returned once again to continue doing what it does best, collect minerals and gas. The Zealot, will also make his return, but now with a new ability. The charge ability gives them to ability to attack their enemies at a very high rate of speed (similar to the speed upgrade from the Citadel of Adun in the original version).

The Stalker is certainly one of the most unique units of all of the protoss ground forces. They can be built from a gateway and once their blink ability is upgraded, they are able to teleport in and out of battle. The Immortal, or the dragoon on steroids, with their long range attacks and heavy shield, they make for a great unit to have in your arsenal. However, I believe the fact remains that at this unit’s current stage it is just too powerful.

At this stage it's just best to judge what they've added, changed, and removed than to judge balance. That'll be continually modified well after it's release. Besides that, a developer once said that you've achieved balance only when players complain of overpowered/underpowered units equally on all sides. You just have to get used to the fact that no battlefield will ever be perfectly balanced. But I'm confident that SCII will be balanced to the degree that'll be satisfactory to the experts, which is high praise.

Compared to Team Liquid's coverage, this is dismal. :/

Apparently you missed where he said he wanted to give a brief first look, not a feature by feature, unit by unit look. Teamliquid is a site devoted to a single game; this site encompasses all 'esports'.

#6: I expect a lot more of Gotfrag journalists. This doesn't even read like it was written by a Starcraft player.
