Starcraft: WCG 2007 US Open SC Preview

By: Lucas Bigham - Published June 02, 2007 at 12:01 AM EDT - Writer Archive
This weekend, the WCG USA Open will be taking place where the top four finishers from last year’s finals are competing. Lucas “Colbi” Bigham is going to briefly examine the four players that will be battling it out in the Starcraft tournament.
As in all of the past WCG finals to date, a Starcraft tournament will be featured at the event. This year is no exception, and the top four finishers from WCG USA 2006 have been invited to compete at the WCG USA Open 2007 Starcraft tournament.

All of the these players will be meeting at the Samsung Experience in New York City with hopes of earning those two spots to the WCG USA finals in Orlando, FL and the WCG Pan-American Championship that is being held is Cancun, Mexico. Unlike last years WCG USA Open where eight players competed, this year there will be only four. All of these players are very well recognized in the United States community and beyond.

Let’s take a close look at the players below:

Geunhwa “rC-XFi.lastgosu” Ralph
The defending WCG USA 2006 champion who was able to take the crown away from the WCG USA 2005 champion Sean “MYM.DAy[9]” Plott. This South Korean native is certainly no stranger to competitive play either being the only gamer in the crowd that has earned a semi-professional gamers license. Recently, he decided to leave his former team of sMi to join up with the redCode.X-Fi organization and their American Starcraft division.

Sean “MYM.DAy[9]” Plott
One of the most popular faces to ever grace the United States community; he has proven time and time against why he continues to show great results at just about every WCG he enters. In 2004, he finished in 2nd at the United States final while in 2005 he was able to finally achieve his first WCG USA victory. Unfortunately in 2006, his crown was taken away from him by Geunhwa “rC-XFi|lastgosu” Ralph.

Dan “Artosis[Media]” Stemkoski
He is one of the most recognized faces in the United States Starcraft community due to his many solid finishes at past WCG events. Last year, he acted as the USA’s representative to Italy in place of Geunhwa “rC-XFi|lastgosu” Ralph who was unfortunately unable to attend the grand finals. Being put into the so-called “group of death” at the grand finals, he was unable to move onto bracket play, but still managed to not go down without a fight.

Tyler “rC-XFi.NonY” Wasieleski
Last year, he made his debut at the United States finals where he moved onto the semi-finals. He was eventually knocked out in a close series with Dan “Artosis[Media]” Stemkoski in the deciding third place match. He will be looking for revenge though, so expect the only protoss user in the group to not take any prisoners.
