Rod "Slasher" Breslau sits down with the American Protoss player Tyler “NonY” Wasieleski who won this year's WCG Open 2007, his first major StarCraft victory. Wasieleski discusses his run to the championship, the American StarCraft scene, and his thoughts on StarCraft II. Tyler “NonY” Wasieleski's highest placing finish before this weekend's win at the WCG Open was a third place finish at last year's WCG US finals. He lost to Dan “Artosis” Stemkoski in the semifinals, missing a chance to make the finals for the first time in his career. Wasieleski missed his chance for revenge against Stemkoski this past Sunday by cruising through the brackets without losing a match. After sweeping his South Korean native teammate and WCG US 2006 winner Geunhwa "LastGosu" Ralph in the opening round, Wasieleski would go on to defeat MeetYourMakers' WCG US 2005 winner and 2006 runner-up Sean "DAy" Plott in two 2-1 sets. The Protoss champion will now represent the United States (along with Plott) at the Pan-American games, as well as having a top seed at the WCG US finals in Orlando, Florida later this year. Congratulations on your victory Tyler, how does it feel? It feels great! I couldn't be happier. Out of the four players participating in today's event, you were probably the least favored of the bunch, how do you feel about your victory? It feels good. I practiced a lot coming up to this event and now I finally feel like I have something to prove. It’s my first major victory either online or LAN, so it means a lot to me. Before the event started did you feel you had a good chance of taking it all, or were you just trying to compete? I was just trying to get top 2 to qualify for the finals, but I was pretty confident coming in. Going up against your teammate and last year’s WCG US champion LastGosu in the opening round, what was your mentality going into the match? How were you able to overcome him? I knew his style and I knew I just had to play some really solid games to earn a victory. He likes to harass a lot once the game gets going, so my plan was to keep both games short which I was able to do quite nicely. I rushed both games, defeating him on the first map and crippling him severely on the second. Once I got reavers later on it was over. What about your first match vs DAy? Well the first map was on the ‘Toss favored Neo Peaks, so I wanted to extend it into a longer game. I felt like if it went long I would come out on top, which I did . The second map he played really well. I went with a conservative build and then tried a fake rush and expand. He never had any real pressure on him and recognized this and pounced on me. The third map I did a quick Zealot rush and was able to take the series. When do you had to play DAy again in the finals what were you expecting? Did you think he would 6 ling rush on the first map, and then forfeit out on the final map? I was pretty surprised he went 6 ling against me first map. I was able to counter his rush with cannons and a push of my own and there was nothing he could really do. The second map he did some weird build and threw me off. He had 2 hatch 1 base and went lings/lurkers. He took the top of my ramp from below which I wasn’t expecting at all, couldn’t come back. The third map I faked a rush with a quick two gateway build, but producing no zealots. His OL hung over my gateways as I produced no units, got gas and started to tech. He was fooled and I was able to start harassment with corsairs shortly after. The game wasn’t over and he could have played it out, but he just ended up quitting. Page:
