Starcraft: WCG undecided on Starcraft 2

By: Trevor Schmidt - Published June 23, 2007 at 4:42 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Blizzard announced Starcraft 2 a little over a month ago and the impact on the WCG hasn't been felt yet.
Starcraft 2 is on the horizon and how the future will play out for South Korea is still in doubt. World Cyber Games isn't quite ready to jump on either side of what could be an interesting debate.

Yesterday members of the Oelli, organizing body of the WCG Mexico and WCG 2006, 2007 Pan American Games, along with Samsung’s Mexican officials held a press conference on this weekend’s events. In attendance was Hyoung Seok Kim, CEO of International Cyber Marketing who is the governing body of the WCG.

When asked about Starcraft 2, Kim responded by saying that none of the games for 2008 have been decided.

“None of the games for next year have been decided,” said Kim, “January or February is when the announcement on next years games will happen.”

He went on to explain the qualification process would happen in its usual format online through a voting process. Another point that was made is that 15 different countries must play the game before it can be considered as a WCG game.

The history of Counter-Strike in the WCG leads to some interesting speculation about Starcraft. The first two years of Counter-Strike at the WCG were played on the current version of 1.6, both at the South Korean Finals. The following year WCG switched to Counter-Strike:Condition Zero for its San Francisco final in 2004, which was never picked up by any other major event/league. Then WCG moved to Counter-Strike Source in 2005 for its final in Singapore. Last year in Europe, WCG used Counter-Strike 1.6 for its final in Monza, Italy.

Back in the USA again this year for its Final in Seattle, Washington USA; WCG has again decided to return to Counter-Strike 1.6. This constant change and willingness to be in front of the market space could be interesting when it comes to Starcraft which is a hugely popular game in South Korea, the base of the WCG and its primary sponsor Samsung.

WCG is unwilling to pick a game yet but their decision to allow both Starcraft and Starcraft 2 as voting options for 2008 games or pick just one should be a difficult decision.

They should keep Starcraft as the 2008 game. Since Starcraft 2 will go into many patches to fix bugs and such.

Trevor, you know better than that. 2004 was San Fransico + CS:CZ, 2005 was Singapore + CS:S and 2006 was Italy and 1.6. Get your facts straight son! :O Doesn't anyone remember when 3D won and everyone was like "Nah.. that was CZ. Nah.. that was CS:S."

As far as StarCraft 2 goes, who cares? The game is not out yet, and there hasn't been a set release date for it yet. Of course they aren't going to pick it now, this is the WCG not the CPL! Once it is released it will be considered, I would assume, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was picked for 2009, but 2008 is too early.

WCG should simply let all the participating countries vote on what games they want and the games that get the most votes (separated by genre) make it in to the tournament, that's pretty much how it works for the normal Olympics.

It's a tough choice, not choosing SC2 in 2008 (if we take into account that it will be ready by the time) might hurt the popularity of the game.
