Starcraft: GGSL Online Qualifiers Preview

By: Lucas Bigham - Published July 03, 2007 at 1:26 PM EDT - Writer Archive
GotFrag’s very own Lucas “Colbi” Bigham will take an in-depth look at the eight qualifiers who will make their debut in the in the second GosuGamers Starleague.
Peter “LRM)MIStrZZZ” Jaworski

He’s certainly one of the most controversial figures in the Starcraft community. Whether you love him or hate he has had an outstanding year. Some consider him nothing more than an average gamer with luck on his side while others consider him a leader in the new generation of European elites. He hails from the country of Poland, which has arguably the strongest National team in Europe along with being the home of many legends in the past. Perhaps the ability to play exceptional Starcraft is found in the water in Poland because they certainly produce many of the strongest players outside of South Korea.

His ability to put up consistent results in tournament after tournament will help him greatly in this upcoming league. However, if he is not able to maintain his consistency I can certainly see him unable to get past the group stages.

Sergey “fAke.MaMon.oO” Belyaev

Like many of the Russian greats in the past, the pressure will be on this relatively up and comer to perform well. While he has really just started to make a name for himself in the European community, he is certainly no random newbie in his home country of Russia. Along with Alexander “3D.Notforu” Davydov, he could very well be the strongest zerg player in his country. Just days ago, he was able to defeat Vladimir “3D.Sudden” Belchikov to become the new Russian King of the Hill which will certainly give him added confidence coming into this event.

CDS)Crow at DreamHack Summer 2006 (Thanks: GosuGamers )
Jakub “CDS)Crow” Sedlacek

In 2004, he represented the Czech Republic at the World Cyber Games Grand Finals in San Francisco. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to move on past the group stages. Since then, he was never really able to produce solid results in various events and seemed to really get pushed back into the shadows while players like Tomas “CDS)PredY” Pospisil began to shine on his team. However, just recently he has really stepped up his play and put up rather impressive results for his clan and national team. Although, I do believe that he will have a tough time making it past the group stages unless he is able to bring his game to bring his game up yet another level.

Tyler “NonY[rC]” Wasieleski

These past couple months have really shined bright for this Duke University student. Last month, he arrived at the WCG USA Open as possibly the biggest underdog and shocked many of his critics who didn’t think he had a chance in winning the event, much less finishing in the top 2. His long hours of practice and dedication were obviously one of the biggest factors in recent success.

His first person VODs are commonly circulated throughout the community. Those who are interested in seeing how one of the strongest American gamers really thinks, and plans out his strategies during a game. Because of the popularity of his VODs, he will most certainly be a fan favorite.

Dominik “xLo.Fabian” Fabjańczuk

Like his fellow countrymen MIStrZZZ, Fabian has really begun to make a name for himself this year. With his partner Krzysztof “xLo.GohaN” Zyszczuk, they have both shown themselves to be one of the strongest 2v2 teams in Europe, if not the world. Recently, he chose to leave his former team of MicroGamerZ to join up with Excello. Since then, he has really started to show drastic improvement and not just his play in 2v2, but also in his solo matches. He is an all around top notch Starcraft player who could certainly cause some upsets in this tournament as long as he plays his cards right.

ToT)SquaLL( at WCG Grand Finals 2006 in Monza, Italy (Thanks: GosuGamers )
David “ToT)SquaLL(“ Saez

This Spanish powerhouse will be one of the faces to look out for in this league. While he has put up some rather inconsistent results in the past, I believe that he will be bringing his A game to the table for this event. With WCG just around the corner and many of the top Spanish players slipping in and out of activity, SquaLL will be practicing hard to guarantee himself a ticket to Seattle. As one of the several members of the Templars of Twilight competing, some added pressure will be on him to perform well.

Tobias “Qpad.datoby” Lundgren

One of the fastest rising stars in all of Europe, datoby has shown with his recent results why he is one of the strongest players in Sweden, if not all of Scandinavia. Coming off a first place finish at Dreamhack Summer, the taste of victory will still be fresh on his mind. I could honestly see him taking out some big name players early on. However, only time will tell for his rising star.

Alex “Skew[Media]” Brola

A member of the group of rising American stars who have really taken the community by storm as of late. While we really haven’t heard much for him in the past couple months, this does not mean that he will not be prepared for GGSL. This tournament could very well play in his favor due to the large amount of zerg users competing, a matchup in which he highly excels at. As long as he is able to stay focused and play with confidence, I can see him easily move on past the group stages.
