Starcraft: WCG 2007 SC Preview

By: Lucas Bigham - Published October 02, 2007 at 10:50 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Lucas "Colbi" Bigham will examine the WCG 2007 Starcraft tournament by examining each group individually and indicating who he thinks has the best chances in advancing to bracket play.

Group A
Poland Draco
Peru xLo.Fenix
Philippines SEAg.SteelHeart
ToT)MidiaN(

The ex-professional gamer Krzysztof "Draco" Nalepka who has been relatively inactive since his time in Korea. He is rusty, there is no doubt about that. Going into WCG Poland, he was heavily favored, but could not even finish in the top three. Luckily for him though, he was able to pay his own way to the United States and to represent his country of Poland to the fullest.

Giancarlos "xLo.Fenix" Alejo is one of the youngest competitors in the tournament. While he is not that well-known, he has shown some very promising results in the past. A player that spends most of his practice time with his predominately Korean team which will hopefully pay off for him.

Coming out of retirement, Jamie "ToT)MidiaN(" Hallam has returned for what could very well be his final World Cyber Games competition. At his prime, he was up at the top in terms of skill with some of the best in Europe. If we are able to see something similar to the play that we have grown to adore, he may very well be the biggest threat in this group.

Group B
Germany BrEaKdOwN
Bulgaria uT)eDDyiSrEADy
Panama kaiser_pan
Belarus LoWeLy[PnD]
Greece xLo.satanik

The German veteran Christian "BrEaKdOwN" Schaefer managed to finish in second place at WCG Germany, one of the toughest preliminaries in Europe, which would grant him a ticket to Seattle. This might have come as a surprise to many because of him remaining rather quiet within the community.

The Greek powerhouse Nikolaos "xLo.sataNik" Konstantakis has finally earned his chance to represent Greece in Seattle. He has played Starcraft since the beginning and has been a dominant figure for several years. This year will mark the first time that Greece will send a representative to compete in the Starcraft event in World Cyber Games history.

Eddy "uT)eDDYiSrEADy" Nedialkov and Brayant "kaiser_pan" Bustamante are perhaps the least favored to advance. However, with the group consisting of just about all Zerg users, anything can happen.

Group C
Russia 3D.Notforu
Germany DkH.GoOdy
United States ToT)iNcontroL(
Bulgaria LRM)Lamer
China Phoenix66

Without a doubt, Group C is one of the toughest. Even after the visa issues that prevented Alexander "3D.Notforu" Davydov from competing, the group still remains very strong.

The German Sasha "DkH.GoOdy" Lupp, while well-known among the Europeans, will be making his first World Cyber Games finals debut. Known for his very defensive style, he will not be an easy victory especially since he is able to play both Protoss and Terran at a high level.

How can we forget the surprise of the United States finals. Geoff "ToT)iNcontroL(" Robinson will be hoping for a similar performance in Seattle, his hometown, that he had back in Orlando. This will not be easy though, and he will have his hands full against some very skilled Terran users.

Ivan "LRM)Lamer" Velikov might very well have the highest chances in advancing. In Singapore, he took the tournament by storm with some very convincing victories and just barely coming up short of the podium.

The Chinese legend, Chuanhai "Phoenix66" Zhuang is one of the most popular faces in the Chinese community along with being one of the most skilled. This is also a player that I have high hopes for to advance out of his group.

Group D
Russia 3D.Androide
Mexico BringIT.asS
Trinidad and Tobago Archer
Malaysia jamesfoo
United States xLo.Nyoken

In 2005, Andrey "3D.Androide" Kukhanidze made it to final match where he would unfortunately lose to the South Korean professional Jae Hoon "fOru" Lee. After his second place finish, he was considered to be one of the best non-Koreans in the world.

Unlike in previous years, a new rising star will be representing Mexico in 2007. He goes by the name of Daniel "BringiT.asS" Teja, and he is one of the fastest rising Protoss users hailing from the America's.

Daniel "xLo.Nyoken" Eidson managed to come in second place at WCG USA. Even though, he had been rather inactive throughout the year. Some consider his Terran versus Terran to be right up there with the Korean professionals which could very well be just what he needs to advance from his group.
