In Group F, controversy arose between the Korean player Byung Goo "Stork[gm]" Song caught using a bug against the Russian Vakhtang "iP.Ex" Zakiev. Near the end of the match, the Protoss had taken the offensive with the Terran, Ex, being forced to play very defensively. While the Terran was setting up his defense he was building turrets near his units which keep observers away from the area, along with being able to fight off flying units in the area or to detect hidden units. During the match, Nick Plott spotted this bug being used on the Koreans screen. Immediately upon seeing this he notified two referees. Shortly after the bug was spotted, Ex had surrendered and Stork won. Before the next match was played, all of the Starcraft referees decided to review the replay. Upon reviewing the replay, there were mixed feelings between the referees about how this should be handled. A few moments later, several members of the South Korea media caught word of what had happened. With cameras in-hand and close to a dozen people trying to get Stork’s attention, the tournament area for Starcraft had turned into a mad house. Stork was asked to sit down with a reporter to answer several questions while at the same time the referees were still trying to decide what to do. One side felt that Stork should be given the win because Ex had already signed the form thus stating that he had officially lost the match. The other side felt that either a re-game should happen or Stork should be given a loss and a warning. After some more collaboration between the feuding parties, the head referee Armin Sayedi made the decision to have them replay the match. When asked about this situation, Armin Sayedi states, “This is really a sensitive situation because of the tie breaker. The rules say to give him a loss and a warning. My opinion is that it did not affect the game that much. I would not offer a loss to Stork. Ex wanted the decision to be fair to him and this was the fairest option for both players." After the announcement was made to replay the game, the Korean press and Ex’s teammates scattered away quickly from the tournament area to allow the players to prepare for another game. In the rematch, the Korean was able to overcome his opponent yet again. |
