Hey guys, we had an interesting adventure tonight with the 20ID v Pandemic match, and I thought I'd shed some light on how we should proceed forward from here.

"7.30 Media Partner Coverage
CEVO reserves the right to allow our media partners to cover any and all event matches for any game title in any event. This is in the best interest of the event and the organization. Any match CEVO or its Media Partners decides to broadcast, ALL teams must comply, failure to cooperate with CEVO or our media partners and the covering of any event match will be considered unsportsmanlike and will result in a forfeit loss."

The logic behind this rule is pretty obvious - more coverage for matches means more interest and leads to overall growth of the game, something I think we can all agree TF2 needs. Plus, CEVO does offer teams a cash prize for the winners, so it's in CEVO's best interest to promote its leagues simply for revenue and site hits, let alone wanting to grow eSports - and one way they do that is Coverage.

There were a variety of factors that affected tonight's matchup - it's Easter, the SourceTV Relay for Spectators is a new-ish thing for you guys, and is kinda glitchy in TF2. I understand that, and am willing to give the benefit of the doubt about it.

More importantly, teams should *want* there to be people watching them, right? You guys want to grow a fanbase, don't you? What better way then to give fans the ability to watch live?

But it's up to you guys to do it. It's up to clans to schedule matches, stick to those times, figure out who's server the match will be played on AHEAD OF TIME (like hours, not seconds), and so on. All I do is connect the SrcTV. The SourceTV process (for those unaware) is pretty simple:
- tv_enable 1 (starts up a local, built-in SourceTV)
- tv_maxclients 2 (slot numbers, at least 1 for the SourceTV Relay, another perhaps for caster?)
- tv_password (if you want to pw it, must tell GF)
- changelevel mapname
- GotFrag connects our relay, and away we go

Despite the myth, having a local TV (tv_enable 1) should not lag your server anymore then having a spec would. Same deal for the relay - and anyone that connects to the relay puts stress on the rig the relay running from, *not* the server. If it does lag the server, a solution - like switching servers - must be found. Kicking the relay is not the way to go - not only because it's against the CEVO rules, but it's a slap in the face to your fans.

If any clans have questions/qualms about the process, I'm always on IRC (unless I'm dead) as "rk-", and would be happy to hash things out for you. Remember guys, this is about growing *your* game, so why not be a helpful part of the process?

Another point about tonight I want to add - I understand a big thing was the lag caused by the SrcTV, and considering how late it was and general frustration levels - not to mnetion playing on Easter Monday - it was easier to just kick the TV and play the match.

Under the circumstances, I understand and even agree to a certain degree with that action. But lets do our best to make sure this doesn't happen in the future. If a server lags that badly just by turning on SrcTV, find a different server (not to mention, you might want to look getting a new permanent one anyways - you're getting cheated by your provider). It was a little too late to do that tonight, and sadly it's the spectators that lost out :/

#3: It should just be like having someone spec in a server, the bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. I suggest all teams log onto their servers and tv_enable 1, and see if it lags.

Heck, even get someone to connect to the TV - the default port for the built-in SourceTV is :27020. Enable a TV, have someone join spec, and see what goes down. Also, start recording a demo via the TV (rcon_address would have to change to :27020) just to be sure.

Sometimes when the demo from SrcTV is started, there's a temporary lag - but it goes away.

I was referring to the bandwidth required on GotFrag's behalf.

We're actually planning to rent relays from NortherResistance.com (we don't host servers ourselves), and in the short time the SrcTV was connected tonight, my NR guy was watching the bandwidths and core usage - both were quite minimal.

Teams could also easily contact Cevo and request to use one of their servers if they notice Source TV lagging their server. The solution should never be to eliminate coverage and something that is simply not allowed and will be enforced next time.

rk, can you give instructions about how to connect to sourceTV to watch the CEVO-P matches? I assume the procedure is just to figure out what times the matches take place, and then connect to sourceTV at the right time?

What, not having SourceTV Demo? Yep, error on my part, miscommunication with my relay dudes.

#9: At the moment, it's pretty specific about which matches will be available to watch. According to most of the clans, when they tv_enable 1, it essentially crashes their server, so at the moment the only way we can get matches available to spec will be when teams play on CEVO servers (as Ex and Dev did tonight).

UPDATE:

So, we had a NEW issue tonight with the Dev v Exi match that I'd like to clarify. Sadly, everyone who was watching on the SourceTV lost the last 2min of the match thanks to the SourceTV delay - the issue is, when the server admin rcon changelevel's the SourceTV just disconnects rather then playing out the last two minutes. Solution:

tv_delaymapchange 1

I'll be PM'ing CEVO|Pipher to update the TF2 configs so this is added into them, but that might not happen till next season - so all clans, make sure you do so when you've got a match that's being watched :)
