I want to try my hand in the competitive scene. I played one match of CAL-O before the team fell through, but I enjoyed it very much. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get picked up by a team or anything?
ring for teams a lot, and get your name out there. you can advertise as a ringer at #tf2scrim, and if you want to practice there are always games going at #tf2pickup, which is also a good place to get to know different players from good teams.
also, be advised... it's the offseason right now, so tf2 competitive isnt very active... so dont be surprised if you have a tough time starting out.
Play in as many pickups as posible. They generally represent the clan style play, even if it is generally a lower level.
Since your American, judging by your flag up top, go to #tf2pickup on gamesurge IRC. Wait for games (they usually run frequently from around 5pm EST to 1/2/3 am.
You could try putting [] before your name, this is a popular tag for clanless people, it also kind of shows that you are looking. e.g. []ruffian.
Try to play the class you want to play competitively in pickups, and make sure this is your best class, if its not, go spend hours on publics perfecting it. It's not always posible to play the class you want in a pickup, but if you can't play the one you want, try to play something your not bad at as it can leave a bad impression and people who might be considering picking you up, might only remember the time you played medic and was rubbish.
Other than that, find out clan channels on irc, teams often put what they are recruiting in their topics. If your goal is to get in one of the better or best clans, start off looking for popular mid range teams. Obviously I don't know your skill level, and tbh, I don't know the American mid skill scene very well, but low skill teams hinder your playing development where as a mid skill will play against mid and high skill teams and you get better from playing against good players.
I'm on #tf2pickup right now, but I have a feeling it will be a bit before I do any actual pickup games. Definitely need to pick a class to perfect, for sure, I've been doing awful as of late. :<
