Soldier nerf, pyro buff

So soldiers now take full damage from their rockets when they aren't rocket jumping -- impressive nuanced change by valve. This seems like a minor but still uncalled for nerf imo. Think it'll have any effect? Does anyone know the nuances of how this works? (if I splash damage myself from the side but I am jumping, do I still take full dmg?)

Anyone think the new and improved pyro will see play? He practically has backstab w/ all crits + 50 health isn't bad either. Air compress gun seems so-so after an hour of play but then there weren't many rockets to deflect back, which seems its almost sole purpose. The flame gun gives pyros long distance spam and a good gun for chasing, plus it seems to require skill (shocking). Will it help against solo ranged soldiers and chasing down medics?

I can definitely see the Pyro being a much more popular uber target than the Heavy now that the damage drop off is gone. As for the Soldier, all you got to do is jump every time you get stuck in CQC to avoid the extra damage. Yes, the shotgun actually is a safer option for the Soldier.

The air compression will definitely allow Pyros to save their fellow heavies from those evil grenades. I can definitely see a Pyro+Heavy+Medic combo being incredibly useful in at least 8 vs 8.

Regular flamethrower is a great defensive weapon. While the backburner's +50 hp buff makes a 335 hp Pyro+Medic ambush quite deadly.

While I don't think Pyros are going to be as affective medic killers as Scouts, a flare shot plus an ambush with the axtinguisher is one of those" high risk high reward" tactics that I think I think will make competetive play way more interesting.

On that note, the crits on the axtinguisher and the backburner still work even with turned crits off.

Unlike the Medic, I can definitely see Pyro players swapping their regular and alternative weapons mid match as the different combos apply to different situations.

Can't wait to see TF2's first "pro" Pyro player.

I personally doubt we'll see extensive pyro usage, even after these changes.

Even a little pyro usage (like current spy, sniper) would add variety. Although I wouldn't be suprised if increased soldier splash dmg vs close range scouts had as big an effect as the pyro changes.

I do hope that this update doesn't make the Heavy useless. Biggest buff to the Pyro isn't the weapons, but the lack of damage dropoff. There's is pretty much nothing a 2 scout combo can do against a Pyro+Medic combo. Just a lick of the tip of from the Pyro's flamethrower will drop the Scout's health by 80 points. It's a bit ridiculous as all the Pyro has to do is spin around while holding the left mouse button and the medic is pretty much invulnerable to Scouts.

I personally think that no damage drop off is imba, but everything else on the new pyro is great.

I think he will get use in scrims now.

The update is fine, except for the soldier nerf. To me it seems like they are trying to make scouts and Pyro's able to kill soldiers and demomen easier (the previous nerf). But surely making a soldier kill himself isn't the right way to go about it?

Also, cp_well.... it could make things interesting.. but what's the saying.. if it ain't broke... don't fix it.

havent gotten a chance to try this but is this true?

Pyro is useful in a 6v6 match (since the update), though not as a killing class. It's been tried and tested and proves to be quite effective ;p

tgl has made the new pyro weaponry illegal in match play. we'll see if the other leagues follow suit.

Bind mouse1 +jump +attack.

If you jump and shoot a wall, you lose 30 hp, if you stand still and shoot a wall, you lose 90 hp.
Just need to get used to jumping before shooting ;p

#19, that's not a solution. Valve just wants to strip the game of any skill. They've consistently nerfed the classes that take talent to play while buffing the spammers.

#21 fairly certain the intent was to make it harder for soldiers to kill things by just shooting their feet with rockets and doing point blank damage to things without taking significant damage, thus adding more skill to the class.

#16 that's fine, its the pushback that i would want to use in a match anyway, the rest is still pretty mediocre unless you can pull off a pro ambush on a team from behind.

#21 whoa, so the ammo reduction for soldier and demoman a few revisions back was just another way of pandering to the spammers?

I messaged TGL|Apathy the other day. He said word for word "Pyro unlocks are illegal". No conditional statement or anything.

#23
I agree... I can see the pyro as being a very useful defender now on top of the C cap with a medic, or in many other situations. I think that the pyro should get +25 health with any weapon, and take away the backburner health buff also... But I can't see that happening.

I can see CEVO letting the pyro weapons into play, since their admins are the most open minded. TGL and CAL are another case entirely, imho. The admins for both leagues tend to have closed minds to new things and aren't as good. They'll probably outlaw the pyro weapons.

As for the soldier nerf, I agree with #21 doesn't know what he's talking about.

I HATE the soldier nerf. I can't tell you how many times I've done a quick 180 and shot the ground nearby only to kill myself. It will take some getting used to but I wish they would just fix it :[

#25
The reason we (TGL) are not allowing the weapons is because we are in playoffs. With the medic unlocks we were in the middle of a season and with both unlocks, wanted to see how they played out first before allowing teams to agree on it.

You don't want us to allow infinitely ubered medics now do you? :P
