What does this guide do?
This guide shows you how to install a stand-alone copy of TF2 and then patch it back to an older version.
In other words, it lets you watch old demos.

Which old demos work?
Any demos between 19 August 2008 - 16 February 2009, provided you have the right version of the map used in the demo.

How much space does this take up?
The TF2 folder is only 235mb.

How big is the patch I have to download?
35mb.

The game doesn't load when I run the shortcut.
Close steam.

I get the error "Unable to load gcfprep.dll" when loading GCF Prep.
Check that you have these installed.
Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or greater.
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package.

I'm sure it is for people making movies. Not so sure for ppl who just want to watch an old match.
Overall it takes less than 5 minutes so it's up to you whether it's worth it or not.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "finding" old patches. To get the patch you just click on a link in the guide.

actually, the demos crash when i have my movie files loaded. but with the default shiz they work. mmmm gay

Odd :S I've tested several demo's from August all the way up to 28 Jan (Probably 27th for US ppl) and the only trouble I had was with demos on old versions of granary.

thank you thank you thank you this is going to make my video so much better. I accidentally recorded all my footage at 30fps, and now i want to go back and record much of it at 90 or 100.

i try to load the demo and i get this:

Missing RecvProp for DT_CaptureZone - DT_CaptureZone/m_bDisabled
Host_EndGame: CL_ParseClassInfo_EndClasses: CreateDecoders failed.

ok i tried a much older demo and it worked. So it seems this doesnt work on demos recorded in the past month... But all the demos solus said would work do!

Correct - Might have a fix soon to add an extra 3 weeks though (so up until Feb 16th).

i would absolutely love it if you could. I have like 6 demos that start on jan 29th that dont work if you can beleive it!

If anyone knows where I can get TF2 GCF files from between January 29 and Feb 16, I can update the rollback patch to allow demos from between those dates to work.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but I would desperately hope Valve keeps backups of every version of the game somewhere on hand, and probably wouldn't have anything against sending them to you if you emailed them.

#9 you won't notice a difference after rendering once it's over 60fps, So just stick with 60. It also saves alot more space.

i know, but its for time stretching

#19 - if you record at higher than 60 it allows for smoother editing and so on - you wont be able to visibly tell when watching a straight feed but it lets you do less.

I�ve updated the rollback patch so that it now also works for demo�s between 28 Jan - 16 Feb.

Nope - I won't be able to get demos working between the 16th Feb - when scout update came out. Sorry :(

Atleast it's only 1 week worth of demos missing since august last year.

Right now I can watch demos from ~September. Probably not anything post first scout update, tho. If it's an amazing demo I could probably be persuaded to capture it. Or at least test to see what plays on that build.

Any chance you can get this working from the scout update to the sniper/spy update? Those demos are no longer watchable.

Hmm, I've downloaded the rollback patch, but there are nothing in it with the name Rollback Patch.
I still extracted everything in that rar file, but my version is still the same.

Won't be able to make it work unless I can find someone with the right GCFs.

Would need the GCFs between the dates of April 20 and May 20:
- multiplayer ob binaries.gcf
- team fortress 2 client content.gcf
- team fortress 2 content.gcf

Valve should provide the gcfs.
They break the demos with the updates, and even when they have enough time to make stupid hats, they dont mind in fixing this big issue.
Im going to make a thread in tf2's Steam forums requesting the gcfs, everybody is welcome to sign :)

This will fix demos for the time period of the scout update.

Note: Only use one rollback patch or the other. Only install a rollback patch over a fresh install of TF2 using the guide. You will get an error if you try copying this over the old rollback patch.

Somebody save your gcfs so he can make a patch for spy/sniper update

I have mine again.

Had the GCF's myself this time (no HDD crash woo!)

This will fix all demos between when the spy-sniper update came out and today's classless update.
Comes with the old granary map so those demos will work too.

Fixed - Redownload the patch if you downloaded it before the timestamp of this post.

Models were black in DX 95. Updated rollback patch includes missing models and materials.
