First post! hey everybody!
now, please, don't eat me alive.

I play tf2 pretty much everyday, and I've been thinking about getting into competitive. I saw this thread
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/sho..
and I thought: Hey why not try a PUG.

Bad idea.

I probobly don't have to tell you I did very poorly, and was instantly banned from not only the server: but the irc channel, and ventrillo server.

I didn't think I was that bad!

so does anyone here know good ways to transition from the random chaos of pub servers to the high strategy of PUGs?

I'm really swallowing my pride to ask, but is there such a thing is a clan for competitive n00bs?

I hope I havn't been a super drag. please, don't flame me to death

Well, there are a couple of things you can do. One is potentially try to reconcile with whoever banned you from the IRC/vent for #tf2.gather though. I obviously don't know the circumstances of your ban and all sides of the story, but usually just "playing poorly" won't get you banned like that. It sounds like someone may have made a request for you to switch class in an attempt to help the team and you refused, or some harsh words were thrown around. Anyways, if you are still interested in pugging, if it was a temp ban try going back later, be very receptive to other people's suggestions and try to keep things calm. Of course, it may have just been a particularly ill-tempered admin and just banned you for playing poorly, I don't really know. If you can sort things out, gathers can be helpful for experience and getting your name out there a bit.

For help in bridging the gap, so to speak, a couple of things could help. One is to play on the "competitive pub" servers. It's a contradiction, yes, but there are several 8v8, no crit, no spread, competition map servers out there. You'll be playing a much closer game to a 6v6 competitive than a 16v16 instaspawn Goldrush. As such, you will also be playing against people much higher skilled than your average pub player. The TF2F #1 and #2 servers are a good place to start: Usually at least one is active during peak playing hours, and a good number of decent players frequent them. It is still a pub, it still isn't organzied 6v6, but you'll be playing against better players in smaller games, often with a better lineup of classes as opposed to 5 engies and 49 pyros.

As for wanting a clan for competitive newbs, try finding a gaming community. There are a lot of communities out there, groups that generally have a largeish number of members (20+ or so) and own at least a public server or two. A bunch of these gaming communities primarily just pub, but usually have a couple of members who will do low-level competitive stuff. In leagues like TWL you see a bunch of teams that don't really scrim or practice a ton, with large rotating rosters for competition. It isn't taken overly seriously, but it WILL at least get your proverbial feet wet for 6v6 play. Best of luck.

I played 1 game on gather, and it went like this:

Go to play soldier:

some guy: hey you! go medic!

ok

after 10 minutes of trying to heal rapidly rocket jumping soldiers:

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?"

"BANNED"

???

like I said I didn't think I was that bad, I can get MVP on medic on a Public server....

no harsh words between us, I was just trying to learn.

game plays out, and then I'm kick/banned from IRC and ventrillo with this:

No hellen kellers!

as if I wasn't talking or somthing.

now I know I suck, but jeez... a little harsh don't ya think?

Unfortunately, the problem is that you WERE Medic. In a gather, if you are a bad Soldier or a bad Scout, in general nobody is going to care. You might get a heckle or two, but it won't be anything catastrophic. That difference is that because the Medic class is so critically important to the entire team it basically can decide if you win or lose the entire round or not.

Getting MVP as a Medic on a public server isn't really much of an indicator. Medics are point making machines, and if ever a Medic isn't at the top of the scoreboard in a competitive match something very unusual probably happened. Playing Medic in pubs and playing Medic in 6v6 are quite difference in terms of strategies and expectations. Pub Medics are expected to heal people every so often and if you pop an ubercharge well that is just gravy. 6v6 Medics are expected to not die, use ubers correctly, not drop or poorly time ubers, and know healing priorities. "No Hellen Kellers" probably meant that you weren't communicating well with your Soldiers, not telling them that you were in trouble, and not organizing things very well.

In short: If you had played Soldier, Scout, or maybe even Demo chances are nobody would've cared. Playing Medic and doing poorly is probably the only time people are really going to rage on you/ban you for being bad in a gather. Next time make things explicity clear that you are not a Medic and that being forced to play one will result in not good things happening.

Gathers are pretty terrible, not because the players are unskilled (which they commonly are), rather because they're often dickheads, especially to people they don't know. I would say try playing in 8v8 no crit no random damage pub servers, or pugs with friends. You can also try to make a team with your friends and join lower skilled leagues like twl, sta, cevo free etc. Some teams in all of these leagues will be a lot better than you but some will probably be on your level. Above all try to ignore the angry kids and try to have some fun ^___^

Good luck.

I would stick to playing in AT MOST a propub server like Pro Like Chro and even players in there are terribad often, so I can't see you being heckled that badly. If you get owned in Pro Like Chro chances are you need to just hit up a 32 man dustbowl or a instant respawn 2fort or something. =/

for the love of god don't play gathers to get better and also learn the game in pubs and get on a twl team

TF2F runs pugs every night at 11:30pm EST, you could try those. They are pretty low-skill, and are sort of aimed at people like you. They are a good transition between pubbing and competitive play, you'll be able to pick up the basics of competitive play, and (for the most part) not get raged at.
if you're interested, here's the vent info:
ip: vent29.gameservers.com
port: 5787

Show up at around 11:20 and hop in the pug channel.
