I am trying to teach some new players proper jumping techniques and I'm not a very good teacher. I'm hoping if they play around on some jump maps their technique could improve. Could you recommend some good beginning soldier and demo jump maps?
Thank you.
EDIT: Updating list based on responses.
Best starting map: jump_rush (If you have a keyboard and mouse you can beat this map.)
SOLDIER rj_ckteer - great first map. Demoman needs an equivalent. (rj_stckyjump please) :P jump_adventure (course 1 - 3) jump_skyscraper (mostly vertical so not many opportunities to practice wall jumps) jump_impact jump_propel (first few jumps)
DEMOMAN demo_barn jump_orange jump_hobo (at least up to the part with the red-glowing teleporter platforms)
Other cool jump maps that intermediate/advanced players should play just because they're awesome.
jump_hobo2 - Demoman map. Has a really cool theme and some very fun jumps. Does not require pogoing to complete. Beatable as a soldier but very tricky. jump_dystopia - One of the best soldier maps out there. Incredible visual style and the 5 courses ramp up in difficulty. jump_revenge - Demoman map. It has some very difficult jumps. The bonus area of this map lets you deathmatch and have a pogo race against friends. jump_tholos - An intermediate soldier map with some challenging and creative jumps. jump_khoa - A challenging demoman map, with some sick jumps. jump_pagoda - A soldier map with a feudal japanese theme. No pogoing. Beatable as engies :-)
As a few people noted, hurtme -999999 on an empty server is the best way to practice badlands/granary jumps, but jump maps offer a new level of challenges for those who seek it.
I learned on cp_skyscraper3. Once you can beat it normally there's potential to beat it with a little more advanced techinques (wall climbs, wall jumps, big strafes)
jump_rush: easiest one I know of; good for just starting out.
rj_rckteer: great overall for learning soldiers; helps with all the basic jumps and especially with airstrafing.
jump_impact: overall a bit harder than rckteer, has a couple dumb pogo jumps but also some very fun airstrafing (like jump 12).
rj_rckteer_adv: for when rckteer gets boring. Remember to put hurtme -9999999 for the rckteer maps, they don't keep you full-resupplied like jump_rush and jump_impact do.
I'm not a big fan of jump_adventure but maybe I just found it too late and it was already too easy. jump_dystopia is hard but it's also awesome, so I'll probably work on that next.
#11: There's no way I could really be "doing rj_rckteer_adv wrong" by using too much health. With maybe a couple exceptions (I guess you could do Across the Pond entirely off a side wall? that's stupid though, the real way is much more fun), all the jumps are designed so you kinda have to pass constantly through full resupply points.
The unlimited health is so I can get from one jump to the next quickly. Walking is slow and boring. It's also helpful when you're starting out because without it, you might mess up so badly that you die and then you have to respawn back at the beginning.
#14: Mention one jump in particular that's any easier with unlimited health? I really don't see it, having gone through the map repeatedly both with and without hurtme. It's the same, except without hurtme it takes longer to get from one jump to the next.
using hurtme on rckteer_adv would make it so much easier
it was clearly designed with normal health limits in mind (hence the location of the resupply health things), and it's much better without extra health
pagoda, propel, tholos are the 3 most difficult. and I agree with #11, they are made just fine and if you can't do them with the health supplied you aren't doing them correctly.
jump_endurance - beginner portion only jump_speed - good for beginners up until jump 9 jump_rush - ok but is almost too easy for beginners. anyone with a mouse and wasd keys can beat it jump_orange - i think might have been intended originally as a mid difficulty soldier map, but im not sure. its really easy for demos though
jump_speed2- good up until jump 11 jump_bob - good up until that one where you have to go through the consecutive square holes jump_.... i cant remember, but its gud
when i get home from school add the ones i forgot.
also, #7 is a lazy basturd. but somehow hes beaten all the maps, demo and soldier. if he wasnt so fckin lazy he prly would say it himself, ask him for tips
As far as game jumping, rush and rocketeer (basic) should set you up with the only real skillset you "need" for comp play. You can get a good feel for air strafing if you can do those jumps, and anything else builds off of those. Only a few map-specific jumps off walls might be tough for you if you can complete those 2 maps flawlessly (badlands up to spire from your left door, granary off the pipe, granary off the wall to crates at mid, gpit up to C etc.)
gman is pretty hard, #21. Just checked out dystopia, and while it's not a beginner's map, it's one of my favorite jump maps. Great style and theme to it.
Also removed speed2 from the OP. Too many jumps require pogoing, a completely useless technique in-game (and not to mention simply not that fun, IMHO)
khoa is medium difficulty only if you're good at sticky jumping, but a lot of it is stuff you're not gonna need in actual games, especially the level of airstrafing at jump nº 6.
Jumps 1 and 3 are the only useful jumps to learn in the map.
gman was a hard map to get a download link for, but I beat it. I personally think propel is harder, but the second to last jump (pogo machine) was pretty intense.
#14 - Exactly, all the maps I do make are intended without unlimited health. The jumps that do require you to hit a health-supply are based on precision most of the time. This was my first time creating an intermediate RJ map without the use of grenades, which I've been fondly using since QWTF. So my last map will definitely be worth seeing because I'm surprised nobody has come up with some jump ideas that would seem easy to implement and never have.
#26 - Yeah, in the words of Wonderwall - 'pogo is gay'.
Anyhow, been working on a map for beginner's mainly specifically. Will have jumps that can easily be gotten to and with in-game helping hints (hard to implement when limited, that is more than text) that will range from the classic single rocketjump through a single multi-rocket jump. I'll post here when it's done, will be a little while since I can hardly swap hands when I'm in the restroom taking care of business.
#32 nice bump and all you have to do is wipe your keyboard when you're done
I like the sound of the map, and - although it's not at all original or creative - I think you should put in a jump of roughly the same size as gpit C red spawn to top floor. The actual jump is probably the most useful "challenging" jumps out there, and if nothing else it'd make your map more generally useful to newbie players -> more played by people trying to skill up -> more popular.
Yeah, the map isn't intended to be original, just for training purposes. I haven't really even played for over a year and since then a bunch of training maps have appeared that are geared specifically for a single purpose, so I thought a RJ map with the same purpose would help, or so I hope at least. My last map will have all the creative aspects, and it will be intense I assure you.
As for the idea of incorporating jumps that mimic real maps, I thought about it and I may for a few extras. Originally the map will feature say, an easy version of a double RJ, then a slightly harder variation of it. Maybe I'll do some scouring and if I can come up with enough in-game areas that are heavily used, I'll try and duplicate them. If anyone has any suggestions, by all means please post them as I don't play TF2 at all, it would help. Thanks.
#37: Which map would that be beef, same as Badlands? You'll have to excuse me, I haven't played more than about 3 minutes of each standard map for TF2. I will soon once I start adding these replicas. Thanks.
My interest is piqued, cownaetion. I can't wait for this map.
Anyways, I started my friends off on rj_rckteer for solly and jump_hobo for demo. I'm not sure how much further we'll go as I'm clearly the only one with a passion for jump maps.
#40: Glad to hear it. Yeah, the very first rj-geared map was what got me started using the mouse believe it or not, and I'll stick by my non-default config. As for a passion for jump maps, I can understand that. It's hard to find some hardcore players who will play a jump for several hours straight (it's worse testing). But when you put in perspective, it's the same as playing any game really, depends on where your interests lie.
If you really like rj'ing, I could always take you on a tour through the old-school maps that I grew up on. If you never used grenades, well it'll be quite different, otherwise their a blast. I'd have to say the current RJ maps for TF2 are harder in most aspects, but that's because the physics are totally different then the old days. Some maps though are pretty damn hard due to the combined timing of the grenades and rockets.
QUOTE:Overall I would watch youtube videos of people rocket jumping, and try to replicate them, be it on a jump map or on the competitive maps.
That is always the best way, however I still can't mimic Wonderwall's motions O_o. Also I'd be careful depending on the type of RJ map if your going for competitive because of the trigger_hurts in some jumps. I almost have a playable, alpha, version of this training map done so hopefully not too much longer.

Keep your suggestions coming, and gl hf.
I haven't played it since the medic needle jump was removed.
sv_cheats 1
hurtme -100000
practice jumps you'll actually use, not triple wall jumps straight upwards(ALTHOUGH I DID ATTEMPT THIS ONCE ON GRANARY WITH GREAT SUCCESS)

also, jump_pagoda is not a beginner map. At all.
Take a look at my jump map pack if you like, I'm running all these maps on an Australian server. There are plenty of easy maps in here.

Also updated first post. Keep them coming!
But also totally useless in a game situation.

jump_rush
rj_rckteer
and then just switch between jump_pagoda, rj_rckteer_adv, and jump_tholos trying to progress in each
protip: noclip past those gd pogo parts they're fucking dumb.
thanks for the map ideas guys, #7 knows how horrible I am at this shit
