I know that the tf2 beta is changing the heavy's melee slot to make him better, but what about changing the maps to make him better? What if we made heavy a little better in comp by adding some pumpkins in strategic locations so they can jump to mid? Even 1 pumpkin at the beginning of granary would allow him to get to mid much faster. Or a pumpkin at the cliff right before spire on badlands so a heavy could get to spire? I think it be interesting, and plus they can still be exploded to hurt people walking by them.
literally every class in this game has its uses. Some classes could use some small buffs, but nothing spectacular. the way you're making it sound is as if you wanted to see heavy in every match, which sounds incredibly boring/europe.
i forget who made this point before but it's a good one: why would you want to see heavies used as a main class when they're so fucking boring to play against
So what you're saying is you want to eliminate the biggest drawback of playing heavy? Not the greatest idea in my opinion. I really think heavy is fine as it is. Actually, I think it's pretty viable on certain maps. At the GXL LAN we picked up a ringer who had the most experience playing heavy. Didn't work out to well on badlands, but I think we surprised everyone when we beat a pretty solid team using one on freight.
STATELY, PLUMP BUCK MULLIGAN CAME FROM THE STAIRHEAD, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him by the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
--INTROIBO AD ALTARE DEI.
Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely:
--Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!
Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak.
Buck Mulligan peeped an instant under the mirror and then covered the bowl smartly.
--Back to barracks! he said sternly.
He added in a preacher's tone:
--For this, O dearly beloved, is the genuine Christine: body and soul and blood and ouns. Slow music, please. Shut your eyes, gents. One moment. A little trouble about those white corpuscles. Silence, all.
He peered sideways up and gave a long slow whistle of call, then paused awhile in rapt attention, his even white teeth glistening here and there with gold points. Chrysostomos. Two strong shrill whistles answered through the calm.
--Thanks, old chap, he cried briskly. That will do nicely. Switch off the current, will you?
He skipped off the gunrest and looked gravely at his watcher, gathering about his legs the loose folds of his gown. The plump shadowed face and sullen oval jowl recalled a prelate, patron of arts in the middle ages. A pleasant smile broke quietly over his lips.
--The mockery of it! he said gaily. Your absurd name, an ancient Greek!
He pointed his finger in friendly jest and went over to the parapet, laughing to himself. Stephen Dedalus stepped up, followed him wearily halfway and sat down on the edge of the gunrest, watching him still as he propped his mirror on the parapet, dipped the brush in the bowl and lathered cheeks and neck.
I agree that the pumpkins aren't the right way to help heavy. Definitely too gimmicky.
I'd love it if all classes were viable mains. However, that doesn't mean I think the classes as they currently play are the direction to make them mains. Heavy's GRU helps a lot, but the simple matter still exists that he's a rather dull class to play and fight, and that should be addressed before he becomes too prominent (hell, it should be addressed even if he is supposed to remain a situational). However, fixing that would probably require serious dialogue and test iterations between players and Valve, something that the beta, unfortunately, hasn't proven itself very capable of doing.
a lot of euro teams run a heavy, given the right map its really effective in certain situations. just gotta know how to play it, there is more to it then just rushing a point and shooting whatever is in your path
I'd like to see a enw gametype here: PUMPKIN FIELD!
Everybody is a scout, with a bat and bonk. In a giant field of esploshun pumpkins. You have to bat your opponents down or even bonk, and bat the pumpkins for some air and to unlock your team's dread heavy with 20 second UBER! And since your in a field of esploding pumpkins, game over.
#28 you realize the size of the blast radius on pumpkins means that your idea is either "make a map where the only viable way to do anything is to avoid the main draw of the map" or "make a map with pumpkins scattered around because hey look pumpkins!"
Although the idea of having a scout drink a bonk then nuking a pumpkin to launch him onto target medic is pretty sick.

Make heavy viable in comp
Just a bit too gimmicky.
?
same with sniper and engineer
Step 1) Heavy jumps off pumpkin
Step 2) Heavy gets airshotted
Step 3) Heavy falls to a clumsy, painful death

Maybe we should worry about other things, like the fact that its been 2 years and there's still only like 3 good maps.
honestly i think it's great that there are 4 main classes and th eothr five are used as "situtatioal" suprises/for different strats
The map still blows though.
go nuts and download a map
