Team Fortress 2: TGL Roughneck Challenge Finals

By: Joe Szymkowicz - Published January 09, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST - Writer Archive
Due to some hectic holiday schedules, we weren't able to keep GotFrag readers updated with the news of the TGL Finals match until today. But we're here now, so let's get crackin'.

Days before New Years, the TGL was already celebrating by ending it’s Roughneck Challenge, one of the first major tournaments for the new game Team Fortress 2. After 7 rounds of amazing TF2 matches, we were left with only two; the squad-based powerhouse 20ID and the underdogs coming into the tournament, The Experiment. Taking place on everyone's favorite map, cp_well, the two TF2 giants were sure to give viewers and fans one hell of a match.

In the beginning of the match, fans would see nothing less than perfection as 20ID ran a clinic on eX and in only mere seconds were able to take the first point. To analyze the round a bit though, 20ID's "pre-game" was perfectly executed, managing to take out Perfekt in the process. This setup for an easy rush into the middle by the scouts, with the others pushing further back into enemy territory wiping out eX in the process. From there on, the medic'd-soldier combo of Mtrd and Vane captured both the second and final control points quite easily. After watching this intricate display of talent, I'm left wondering "Would this be how the whole match would go?" Would 20ID be taking a page out of the Doctor's playbook, and continuing wiping the floor with this eX team?

The second round, eX came out guns-a-blazin, with soldiers immediately going into battle for the middle control point and scouts trying to get rid of any 20ID members in the area. One notable point about this melee was that eX actually uber’ed before 20ID and still managed to hold the point. This round was already looking better than last. The second control point would not be handed over so mercifully though. Excellent Demoman work from 20ID's Kaybee would hinder several rushes from the eX group. The Experiment would ultimately take the second point and move onto the final control point though after a couple of minutes. With several eX members rushing at the final control point, it seemed all but certain that eX would win. But with a last save by 20ID players ginc and xerxes, eX would be pushed back to outside of the 20ID to reassess their status and get ready for their next rush. After gathering back their entire force, they made another well-timed push and managed to get three members onto the platform. It was an all-out brawl for the point, pitting Reptile against both Ginc and Vane. In a stunning turn, Reptile was able to rocket both players and capture the point, evening the series up at 1-1.

The third round started and The Experiment seemed to actually use the same strategy that 20ID used on them first round; taking out 20ID players before the round started and making an easy capture of the middle point. After that, it was downhill from there with eX making quick work of the next point. Although 20ID did put up a minor struggle to save their last control point, not even 3 20ID players could stop an ubered-Reptile as he was able to clear the platform and win the round, making the score for the match 2-1 in favor of eX.
