Team Fortress 2: GotFrag TF2 Invitational Preview

By: Nick Pitts - Published January 11, 2009 at 9:14 PM EST - Writer Archive
Nick Pitts takes a look at the 8 teams competing in the upcoming GotFrag TF2 Invitational.

The first ever GotFrag TF2 Invitational is just days away, after a long layoff from the exciting fall-season. There's no doubt that teams have been taking it easy over the holidays, scrimming occasionally but mostly just enjoying their time away from the mouse & keyboard (or playing WotLK). But, with CEVO's third season right around the corner, and our own GotFrag tourney about to kick off, it's time to scrape off the rust and get down to business.

The GotFrag TF2 Invitational, in partnership with GameBattles.com and Razer, is an invitation only, 6v6, double-elimination tournament with prizes to be given out to the top two finishers. 8 teams have been invited by GotFrag to participate.

#8 - Team Dynamic

If ever a team was coming in under the radar in this tournament, it's Dynamic. A late addition to the teamlist, taking over the defunct eXult's spot, these guys (or the manager) practically leapt at the chance to compete with this class of teams, eager to prove the new-look Dynamic is a force to be reckoned with. Time, of course, will tell how much of a force they will be, but with such a stacked field I'm not holding my breath for a top 5 finish.

Pros: A new-look roster and a desire to show up their betters could light a fire under these guys.

Cons: But how far does a new roster make up against such heavy hitters like Pandy or iDem?

This team is feeling great after winning CEVO-A and they are ready to attempt to keep their streak alive. They have been active with an abundance of practice, which is good because they are in a whole other field now with much better teams. With this being said though, excitement and practice isn’t always enough. They have a chance to upset some teams that have been taking a back seat to practice and that are going to underestimate them. Or, they could also, to put it simply, crash and burn. I don’t know what else to say to them besides get ready to beat or take a beating.

Pros: Noted for their dedicated practice regiment, and are riding that on that DDR2 prize, baby!

Cons: Are they up to playing with the big boys?

#6 - Xensity

After talking with quite a few people, Xensity seems to be quite the fan favorite. After adding half of the old reliq team, they now have an awesome soldier duo to compliment a kickass demo and a delightful scout pair. Yes, I said delightful. They pulled some upsets during their great run in the CEVO playoffs but were then upset by a 5-1 look to eMazing, who is no longer alive. All I have to say is, consistency is key. After beating AI, iDemise, and Sway, they shouldn’t have lost to eMazing, even though eMg was a good team. I look forward to them pulling some upsets in this tournament just like they did in CEVO.

Pros: The units within the team are rock solid - a soldier who that's been playing together forever with their medic, a demo that can change the course of a match in a matter of seconds (see cp_well YouTube video :P), and well reputed scout unit with a bit to prove.

Cons: No phantom? Ouch. Major ouch.

#5 - Sway Gaming

Yet another double-player-transfer occurs with Sway adding reen and yaug after some of their players went inactive. Hopefully with these additions, they'll be prepared to do what it takes to win (scrim4life). Their performance is a direct result of their commitment, either obliterating the opposing force (that was geeky) or just showing up as a mediocre team. When it comes down to it, it is difficult to predict how this team will do because they can and have showed up and beat just about any team - whether or not they will in THIS tourney is the question. Their level of commitment will make them or break them later on in the tourney.

Pros: A couple quality pick ups rounds out a good starting 6 and fills in a bit of a weakness at soldier.

Cons: How long will it take for yaug to jell with the team?
