Team Fortress 2: Major Roster Shakeups - Pand, iDem, more

By: Everett Wells - Published February 01, 2009 at 11:57 PM EST - Writer Archive
A number of top teams shake things up, swapping players like a cheap Fox reality TV show.
(GotFrag) - It seems that the major shakeups in Pandemic and compLexity leading up to the GotFrag Invitational Final were only the beginning - while most of us were busy watching G.S.P. win a second belt or Arizona pull off the miracle only to have a miracle pulled on them, many of the top TF2 teams in North American decided to jump ship across almost the entire board (except for the best team of the bunch, coL). While the name changes and roster swaps are by no means over, there are a few big moves that have already popped up on the CEVO-P rosters that we can confirm, and maybe a few more that are still in the works.

First off, leaving the United States Pandemic organization are pheLon, paladin & REM, reportedly cut from the organization by carnage in the apparent fallout of the loss to United States compLexity. The remaining roster of carnage, glue & relic were immediately merged with the (now former) United States Xensity squad - who have supposedly been having some problems of their own lately - as well as picking up Jaeger from United States Apoplexy Industries to fill in the remaining soldier spot. Due to the way the team ownerships worked out, the new Pandemic squad is currently listed as Xensity in the CEVO-P ladder, and retains Xen's current record of 2-1 with 4K^ & the frm. Sway Gaming on the docket for Monday. While the roster has a full plate of names attached to it, the most likely lineup for the starting 6 will be:

United States Pandemic.TF2

Scout - carnage
Scout - enigma
Demoman - Solid Snake
Soldier - Jaeger
Soldier - relic
Medic - glue

Though it's important to note that thenoid, dinan & virulent are still available for backup purposes.

UPDATE: Seems like thenoid & virulent found homes during the night with iDemise & fragD, respectively.

Meanwhile, our group of Pandemic-castoffs - who retained the team ownership and currently sit at 4-0 (they had the old United States Saget in Tights name on the teampage for a short time) - have reformed under the familiar banner of United States iDemise and picked up a few free agents from the scene, though are still a key piece away from a complete roster.

United States iDemise.TF2

Scout/Utility - justin
Scout/Utility - bman
Scout/Utility - cyzer
Demoman - REM
Soldier - pheLon
Soldier - paladin
Medic - thenoid(?)

Both justin and bman have had extensive experience in top level TF2, with tags such as makeSHIFT, Eximius Sports & Check-Six Gaming seen in front of them from time to time, while cyzer returns to his old SIT/Dev/iDem teammates after a brief time away. GotFrag was able to catch up with iDemise/pheLon for a few quick questions about what, exactly, went down this weekend:

(GotFrag) - Hi pheLon, got time to answer a few questions about the roster swaps?

pheLon - Sure, but not much to answer - me, paladin and rem got cut by carnage who isn't even the team leader at 4am Saturday morning.

(GotFrag) - So the organization sided with him? Have you had any contact with Pandemic-Lemley?

pheLon - None of us have bothered to talk to Lemley, we didn't really care that much. It wasn't fun playing with them [carnage & glue] - we were having problems when we were winning, so I knew as soon as we lost the team would be done.

(GotFrag) - So iDemise welcomed you back, or is that more just a tag your wearing to identify the different team?

pheLon - Yes, were back in iDemise.

(GotFrag) - Alright, let's see if my logic holds: pheLon/paladin-soldier, REM-demo, justin/bman-scouts? cyzer-? And you're still hunting for a solid 6th?

pheLon - justin/bman/cyzer all scout/utility, and we still need a medic (might see if one of the scouts wants to do it).

(GotFrag) - You obviously weren't totally comfortable with the setup in the old iDemise/Pandemic, are you more optimistic now?

pheLon - Yeah, it wasn' much fun playing with carnage and glue anymore. They have now killed the 2 teams that had a good shot at beating Pandemic/coL. carnage was the same way in q3, I thought he might have matured some by now so we gave it a shot, and it didn't work out. He's pretty much just killed 2 teams to make Pandemic version 3, and he's not the greatest of team players.

The final note (for now) with all of these shenanigans is the sad fate of Apoplexy Industries, who after first losing biggy for the season due to RL, then their leader litany to a broken wrist, now face a huge whole to fill in Jaeger's soldier spot - the combination of which has proven to be a bit too much. While nothing's official, litany has all but thrown in the towel for AI this season, with the hopes of reforming the team and bouncing back for the next season when biggy & himself are back in playing form, and perhaps Jaeger can be enticed to return to the AI-fold.

You'll be able to see all these teams and more in action tomorrow night as CEVO kicks off its 3rd week of play - though these roster changes have forced our guest predictor paraGon-waar to make more than a few re-writes over the course of the weekend ;)
