Team Fortress 2: TheFragile Interview

By: Nick Pitts - Published April 05, 2009 at 11:14 PM EDT - Writer Archive
After his recent departure from coL, Nick "TheFragile" Leon sits down with GotFrag to answer some questions.

Alright, let's start things off with a bit of an intro to "TheNickLeon" - see what I did there?. Anyways, what do you do in your off time? Are you going to school or just working? And what games, or sports, did you play competitively before TF2?

I'm currently finishing my second year of college, which has kept me reasonably busy. I've played roller hockey for about 6 years, ice hockey for about a year, currently fencing at college. I've played Unreal Tournament 2004, Day of Defeat Source, Counterstrike Source, Quake 4, and Call of Duty 4 competitively prior to Team Fortress 2 (technically I took a 2-3 month break to play CoD4). I miss DoD:S a lot though.

You played medic for quite some time. How long was it until you began to get a bit bored, even though it is probably the most vital class in the game? Was it your first choice in the beginning to medic, and since you guys were winning you had no problem with it?

Well, I've been playing medic competitively since beta, and I don't think I started to become really bored with it until maybe after the CGS finals. Winning a lot of the time was nice and all, but there were times where I'd rather frag than heal. However, it actually wasn't really my choice in the beginning. The team that I was playing for at the time (Pure) needed a medic, so I volunteered to fill the void. Truth be told, I wanted to be a full-time spy when pubbing in beta ;p.

Anytime you got bored with it did you just go pub or pug as other classes?

Yeah, more or less. I'd pub with real-life friends or pug when I was bored otherwise.

In an ideal situation, what class would you want to play?

I'm really in between scout and soldier. I have my good times and bad times with both. I'd say I like scout more right now, but I'd inevitably be a better soldier.

Have you began brushing up on that class?

Nearing the days of my departure of compLexity, I've been ESEA pugging with scout and soldier quite a lot. I have a lot of catching up to do, though.

What is one positive thing you can take from the coL experience?

I have a massive amount of respect for the organization. They have been a pretty big mark on eSports, and to be a part of that is pretty incredible. As for the TF2 team, I've played with them since the game came out (and joined them nearly a year ago), so it was great to get to know and play with them.

Anything negative?

I wouldn't say anything negative came out of it. Overall, it was a good experience.

What's your favorite in-game memory while with the team?

It's definitely between winning nVision and winning CGS. Just going to nVision was an incredible experience, but the CGS finals was probably the greatest match of all time.

Did you ask the team if you could possibly not medic next season before leaving?

No, because everyone was perfectly fine with what they were doing on the team.

Do you believe the team could have been even better with you as another class?

I don't really think any of us could play someone's main class better than them (however, Reptile and hubris can play any class very well).

Could you please explain to the community why dogs are better than cats?

Dogs are better than cats in the aspect of crying, whining, barking excessively, not being awesome, not being fuzzy, not being a cat, not being able to have a cat face, not purring, and not having an awesome leader. (I guess sully leads the dogs?)

Dang, thought I had you trapped.

Typical dog.

Although having players with raw skill is important, how vital is sticking with a team and growing together? Many teams want to just change there roster thinking that a player is the problem. In your opinion, in TF2, is the cohesive play more important than just having 6 all stars?

Sticking together as a team is pretty important. Playing with the same guys for a while is definitely beneficial in the long run, since knowing each others play styles is vital.

Who has the best needle gun in the game?

Apparently it's between Ruwin and I, but we've never had a 1v1 yet. However, I wouldn't leave Casey out of the picture.

If there was one thing which needed to be changed, removed, or added to TF2, what would it be?

More competitive stopwatch maps. This is long overdue.

Alright, thanks for your time. Any last shout outs? (this is where you insert your cat face).

Shoutouts to Torbull, Fattywhale, heineken`, rk, sully, A Seagull (and the rest of the Terminator pre-game crew), BLACKYMONSTER, Buick, cypher, ruwin, thursday, Tarheels, Cyzer, apoc, bman, justin, Dion, FuzzyHat, Pandemic, coL, former Sway, pure.CoD4, jh and the rest of the Europe, the Australia, the New Zealand, the Brazil, QuakeLive, Starbucks vanilla bean frappuccino, the Catface club, and my cat :3. For anyone not mentioned, just pretend your name goes here. ;p
