Team Fortress 2: TWL S3 Grand Finals

By: James - Published April 06, 2009 at 1:37 PM UTC - Writer Archive
the terribles square off against Old Skewl Ballahs in the TWL S3 Grand Finals.
(GotFrag Community) - We’ve finally reached the Big Finale, The Grand Stage, The Last Hoorah and we have two great teams ready to square off for the pride of taking home the title of the best TWL league to date!

On one side, we have a team that I fully expected to do well, the terribles. On the other side we have the Cinderella story of Old Skewl Ballahs, who have shocked many in their pursuit of the title.

The finals are to be played on Badlands, a favorite of many and very entertaining to watch.

Before writing my always accurate take on the match, I decided to sit down with a designated player from each team just to get a little insight on how they got to where they are and what their expectations are going into the final match.

I first sat down with Flow Rida, the founder of Old Skewl Ballahs:

Hello FlowRida, would you start us off by introducing yourself and your clan?

Flow Rida: Well first off, I would like to give a little clarification about my name because it is so often mispronounced... it's Flow Rida, not to be confused with the great state of Florida, or the wonderful rapper that we've all come to know. My name is Mark, 26 years old, from Atlanta GA. I've been playing FPS pretty much all my life... I first got hooked when Duke Nukem first came out, and it's been all downhill from there.

OSB is a bunch of fun loving, amateur players that all share the same love for FPS. The clan was started by a bunch of beer drinking maniacs messing around on a public server, DGB, and decided to form a competitive team for fun.

We currently compete in many amateur leagues around the net, including our favorite TWL.

I was going to have to cut the interview short since you're a southerner.... but I'll let it slide just because TWL is your favorite league <3. So what expectations did you guys have coming into S3? Championship? Play-offs? Bottom feeders?

Flow Rida: Just as a side note then, I was born in Buffalo, NY, so don't hold the southern thing against me! Yee haw!

Coming into S3, we were just getting started with a line up that clicked well for each class... so we really didn't know what to expect. To make it this far has kind of been a Cinderella story for us!

I know you guys had a little luck getting past the first round because of a certain missing scout (I kid, I kid), but how have you pulled off this run? I for one, was very surprised.

Flow Rida: Well getting past the first round, was no small feat, beating the melons! It took a lot of practice on our part to make sure that we were clicking well as a team. We also had some players that were inactive during the early part of S3, that came back to us for the meat and potatoes. That really filled in all the missing holes in our roster.

Sounds like they came back at the right time. Badlands is the final map, how do you think you'll hold up on that? Any unusual things we should watch out for?

Flow Rida: It seems like the TWL final is going to be a repeat of Cevo Week1 with, hopefully a different outcome! Everyone in OSB is a first rate spy, so be on the lookout for the ultimate backstab!!!

Badlands is one of our favorite maps, so it will be fun just to play the finals there.

I'm sure it'll be entertaining to watch as well, anything you'd like to say to the terribles while we are here?

Flow Rida: Yeah, one thing... I hope they live up to their name, and be just that.

osnap! Any last comments to our readers?

Flow Rida: It's been fun playing in TWL, we hope to continue with S4 after a glorious victory on Tuesday! I'd also like to say what's up to all the OSB and DGB folks out there... without you guys and all your hard work we wouldn't have made it this far! And one last shoutout to the main man Mr., without his n00b ass I would have never made the switch from Quake 3 to TF2. Make sure you guys are all around to check out the shoutcast on Tuesday and me dominating the Terrible's with one rocket!!! I call it death from above! 8)

I'll be watching (as I'm sure all our readers will be)! Thank you for you're time Flow Rida and good luck on Tuesday. Maybe we'll have a follow up interview next week.... with the crown on your head!

Flow Rida: Thanks man, it's been a pleasure. I can't wait for that followup! Our throne is awaiting!

I then got Tordana’s perspective on the upcoming match:

Hello Tordana, would you mind just giving us a little background on yourself and the terribles?

Tordana: The terribles as a team were created in October 2008, led by Volt. He was interested in getting into the competitive side of TF2, not just pubbing. So, he started looking around for good players from the pub he played on all the time-- the Drunken Brawl. He and myself were (and both still are) admins of that server, and its home to many good players.

He started asking who would be interested in playing, and from the start recruited myself to play medic, cake! and poopinator to play scout, and focker to play demo. All these initial players came from regulars on the Drunken Brawl. Since then, we have picked up additional talent from the competitive community and here we sit!

Have you competed in any other leagues? How were you expecting to hold up in the TWL league?

Tordana: We also played in CEVO-F season 3 and CAL (until CAL died). We finished CEVO-F regular season 5-3 and getting the 16th seed into the playoffs, thus having really good opponents and getting knocked out of the playoffs early.

Coming into TWL we weren't entirely sure what to expect, but after getting some scrims in against teams in the league we were pretty confident we could do well. Our play has done nothing but improve throughout the season, and we're feeling pretty confident about our chances at this point.

You certainly have done well! Anything or anybody we should keep a close eye on during the final match?

Tordana: Our team is very well rounded, I don't think we have any superstars. Expect everyone to have their share of good plays. With that said, keep an eye on cake! and focker to pull out some really clutch plays, those two always seem to get impossible jobs done when it's needed and then fade into the background when it's not. Also, we're a team that isn't afraid to mix it up. Weird strats, non-standard classes... be ready for anything. :)

I heard from a little bird that you've faced OSB before, mind elaborating a little?

Tordana: We did, in fact. OSB was our first match in CEVO. Interestingly, that match was on badlands like the TWL final will be. Also interestingly, we won 5-0. 8 weeks is a long time in TF2 terms though, both our rosters have changed a bit since that matchup and it will be interesting to see if we can repeat that performance. Of course, I think we can. ;)

Them be fighting words! I like it! Well thank you for your time, is there anything else you'd like to add?

Tordana: Just want to say thanks for the interview and hope you enjoy the match! Should be a good one, so if it gets shoutcasted watch it!

I'm sure I will. Thanks again and perhaps I'll be talking to you soon, with the TWL cup in hand!

Tordana: I think that's quite likely. :)

the terribles

Well there are the two teams, in a nutshell. Both quite confident they’ll win this one. OSB thinking they can pull off one last upset and avenge their previous loss, whereas the terribles are looking for a repeat of CEVO Week 1.

What do I think? I’m torn here. I predicted against the Ballahs last week and had to watch as my prediction crumbled. There is no doubt in my mind they are a different team from the regular season, but are they good enough to take down the reliable terribles?

I have the feeling that the terribles may just be too consistent for OSB. The terribles have shown a lot of fight during the regular season in both TWL and CEVO, making the play-offs in both leagues. I will be looking for OSB to make a number of great plays and rake in some points, but I think the terribles experience, teamwork and consistency is going to be too much to overcome. The terribles take this one and come back next season as the defending champs.

Winner: the terribles

The match will be taking place on Tuesday, not Monday. Keep a close eye on www.teamwarfare.com for more match and shoutcast information.

Good luck to both teams!
