Team Fortress 2: A Pseudo-Rankings for NA TF2

By: Everett Wells - Published August 11, 2009 at 7:15 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Modelled after the CS 1.6 World Rankings format, here's how the top echelon of TF2 shakes out.
(GotFrag) - This started out as just an experiment to compare TF2's relative level of competitive success to that of its older brother, Counter-Strike 1.6.

The GotFrag CS Department recently updated their World Rankings by using a new, results-based format seen here, to which I applied the relevant tournaments/seasons of TF2 play that have happened this calender year.

The results are, to say the least, rather puny - as some would expect, only 8 teams really managed to qualify in the point system laid out by divito's format, since many of the other teams that garnered points don't exist anymore, or were until recently competing in lower-tier events (ie. CEVO-Free Season 3) with even more teams that don't exist. At any rate, the events that ended up being counted are:

The GotFrag TF2 Invitational
CEVO Season 3 - Professional Division
ESEA Season 2 - Open Division
CEVO OCZ Tournament
ESEA Season 3 - Invite Division
ESEA Season 3 - Open Division

The CEVO OCZ Tournament in particular throws off a lot of the tallies, as most teams just gave up and FF'd towards the later stages which made me wonder how much weight those results should have. In any event, here's how the numbers work out:

NA RankingsChangeLastPointsCrowns
1United States Loaded0114903
2United States compLexity0214201
3Canada Evil Geniuses0311900
4United States pureEsports+154400
5United States Area 51+494151
6United States 20ID-244001
7United States All NaturalNew-3100
8Canada Strickland PropaneNew-2800

There are a few things that stand out right from the start - obviously, the fact that Loaded, coL and EG were all in the top 3 of most of the events means there's a bit of a seperation between them and the pack. Also, 20ID was hit pretty hard by the fact that they only competed in 1 of the events listed (and only existed for 2, really).

In the end, this system just isn't fit for TF2 - there are too few events, too few teams and too small a talent pool of the upper echelon-qualibre teams. Which is why, as we speak, BUICK is putting together a top10 list via the older format - that is, taking a survey of major players, administrators, and community members in the North American TF2 world and tabulating a rankings based on submitted lists.
